Traynor ycv-50 blue

so i finally got to play my traynor during a gig last night, and while it sounded amazing, and i had no problems dialing a tone i liked, there was this smell of burning plastic... it was not strong, but it was there also it got really hot. i'm not used to amps like this because my univox has an open head enclosure, that allows for more air circulation, so i never really noticed how hot it got. is it normal for newer amps to give off burning plastic smell and feel quite hot? i could hold my hand on it so i wasn't burning hot, but it was really warm.

other than those issues, it sounded great. i think i may replace the el34 for something else the stock ones lacked a bit of punch but nothing that was drastic. i had a lot of people complement me on my sound which was nice

Re: Traynor ycv-50 blue

Did you remove any protective film over the tubes before playing? That could be the burning plastic smell.

Re: Traynor ycv-50 blue

none of the tubes had plastic on them when i bought it. i double checked today too, just to be sure.

Re: Traynor ycv-50 blue

found the problem. there were these rubber pad things that were glued to the plate/door that houses the preamp tubes, placed under each tube. well i found that 2 of the tube heads were touching the rubber pads and had actually melted them a bit. i'm thinking they were there for protection. i figure it would be alright to remove them... or should i keep them on? there should be no issue, right? or should i leave them?

Re: Traynor ycv-50 blue

They're probably there to keep the tubes from vibrating and going microphonic (feedback). Either that or they are to protect them from being whacked around during shipping, and you're actually supposed to remove them. Either way, they shouldn't be melting!

I'd give Traynor's customer support line a try. I've heard good things about them.

Re: Traynor ycv-50 blue

it seems that those rubber things were the problem. i've had my amp on for a while now and no smell. they weren't melting too much, just where the tip of the tube made contact you can see a small melted dent. they were covering some small vent holes too, and the foam rubber things were not allowing any air to go through. i'm gonna crank it this evening and see if the tubes go microphonic
