Trembucker or humbucker, pls help

Hi!

I'm buying a set of DD for both bridge and neck. Unfortunately, I don't know what the cheap guitar, where the pickups are going to, has---humbucker or trembucker---please help! It's an ESP LTD M-5, the one in the bottom of this link: http://www.espguitars.com/guitars_m.html

I don't know, should I get the SH-6 or TB-6 ?????????????????????

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Trembucker or humbucker, pls help

Just measure the length between the E polepieces on the pickups. 50mm is SH, 52mm is TB.

And I've used humbuckers in trembucker guitars and I don't notice anything bad with it. I wouldn't worry about it. Some do, however, but I wouldn't.

Thanks. What would be the distance b/n the polepieces---b/n their centers, or sides (inner or outer?) ?

Thanks!

Re: Trembucker or humbucker, pls help

Ideally every pole piece should have the string exactly over its' center but usually there are small differences.

What really matters is every string to be above the pole piece, even off center

Re: Trembucker or humbucker, pls help

Just measure the distance from the low E string to the high E string right over the poles of the bridge pickup.

Or, to answer your question, it is measuring from the center of the outside poles.

Yes, but if I get a humbucker, and it turns out I needed trembucker, would the humbucker be easy to install?

Also, I don't think they sell the Duncan Distortion Mayhem set in trembucker version...

Re: Trembucker or humbucker, pls help

I just measured the precise distance between the centers of the two poles over the E strings.

Turns out the bridge pu is 52mm, the neck is 50mm....

Bump!!!!! :(((

Would it be easy to install an SH in the bridge then?

Re: Trembucker or humbucker, pls help

Personally, I'm not sure there's a huge difference either way. Some will say that there is, and that's fine, but IMO I think you're good with either one.

In response to the last post, trembuckers are for the bridge, not the neck. So, for the 'best' setup, you'd use a trembucker in the bridge and a 'regular' spaced neck pickup (for example a Jazz neck).

You need a TB in the bridge and an SH in the neck.

I though a visual would help you out. In this picture of this guitar, the guy has an SH pickup in the bridge instead of an F spaced, or TB pickup. You can see how the strings do not pass directly over each pole. They go on the outside of both low and high E string as well as the A and B strings too. The strings all pass over each pole in the neck pickup though.

Hmm...would I notice a difference in the sound if I have it that way? I mean, have a humbucker instead of trembucker, and consequently the string/poles misalignment?

Re: Trembucker or humbucker, pls help

Some cannot tell the difference while others do.
There will be a difference in volume and/or tone on the strings that are off compared to the ones that are not and should you do a bend on those strings pulling them further away it would become even more noticeable.

All in all don't expect sth as dramatic as the pickup being too small for the route or some strings not sounding at all but depending on how trained your ear is you may notice it.

If possible get the TB spaced for the bridge (as noted above the neck pickup is normal spaced either way), if you can't then the normal HB spaced will work good enough...
