Trick to using 250k pots with Jb Jr, Duckbucker and Lil 59

I put in the everything axe selection recently ( Jb Jr bridge, DuckBucker middle and Lil 59 neck ) So far the coil tap switch is almost always engaged and I use bridge-middle most of the time. I can eventually get good tones running this modified 74 Strat into my Line 6 Helix, but something tells me I don't yet comprehend the need to adjust the volume and tone controls. Previously I had three Lace Sensor Golds and I kept the volume and tone controls maxed 100% of the time.

Just hoping for a quicker route with less futzing with amp treble/presence, EQ settings etc.

The "partscaster" has a Warmoth maple neck but the original body and bridge.

You should be able to get some pretty awesome sounds with that, at any setting. Have you tried it with a regular amp yet?

Don't even own a regular amp anymore. I run the Helix into either a powered full range speaker or studio monitors when editing patches at home. As you know there are a number of variables -- ear fatigue being one I have to watch out for. I suspect a little more can be done in the area of pickup height and finding the sweet spot for the tone and volume knobs. Today I noticed that the G string was maybe 20% hotter on the middle pickup than either of the others in split mode, so I lowered the treble side of the Duckbucker.

I’m not clear what problem you are trying to solve. You said you might not comprehend using volume and tone controls and keep them dimed and don’t want to change your amp settings. I’m not clear what any of that has to do with 250k pots. What exactly is wrong with the sound you are hearing now that you are trying to fix?

Well first I'm not used to rolling back the guitar knobs. Not opposed to it, I just need to understand the why and when. I'm constantly fiddling with all the parameters in the Helix, largely because I'm very picky about overdriven tones. I can get good cleans today. Overdriven takes some work, fiddling with the guitar knobs, amp model presence/treble, parametric EQs and impulse responses chosen in the Helix, etc etc.

The "standard" is 500k pots for humbuckers and 250 for single coils, so since I'm using the Jb jr and Lil 59 split most of the time, 250 should be correct. The acid test is how it sounds with the band in the venue, it just seems to be taking longer to get in the ballpark at home with these pickups. I was kind of hoping somebody who's used the same pickups would jump in and say "yep, what I found is pickups at this height, volume knob here, tone knobs rolled back to there and Bob's your Uncle." :-)

Single coil size humbuckers are pretty compressed. I used some with a 1 meg volume and no tone and they sounded good. Just use whatever scheme suits your eq goals.
