Tried a Jackson SL2H Soloist today...

Had a free 15 minutes so I went into a local guitar shop. I decided to try out a soloist, mainly because I wanted to see what the compound radius was like. Didn't have time to plug it in unfortunately, but here are my thoughts after playing it unplugged:

I was very impressed with the quality overall. The fit and finish were superb. The binding and frets were perfect, superior to the vast majority of guitars out there. Even though the set up wasn't perfect, it was clear that it was a real quality instrument. I loved the jumbo frets... bends were effortless and my vibrato improved too. Anyone know the exact fret size?

I was really surprised at the thickness of the neck. I expected a thin shredder type neck but it's actually a decent size (not huge though). Unfortunately, the shape didn't really suit my hand... it felt a little too square (D-shaped, I suppose). I prefer a rounder shape.

The compound radius is very, very subtle. If I hadn't been looking for it I probably wouldn't have noticed. I believe it's 12-16 radius. Personally, I feel 16 is a bit too flat... 10-14 might be ideal and probably more obvious too.

Something I noticed was that it was a bit neck heavy. It probably wouldn't be a big deal with a strap, but sitting down there was a slight dive. Don't know if this is the case with all of them, or if mine just happened to have a very light body.

I don't really know much about Floyds (TOMs are the way forward!), but it was an OFR and was very smooth to use. Can't really comment though. :)

Anyway, although the neck carve isn't to my liking, I was very impressed and now understand why people love them. :)

I have an SL3 and love it. Like you say, it has a pretty big neck, it also has a really heavy body which means it seems closer to a Les Paul IMO than a strat.

It seems like the Soloists are just great quality all-sround guitars. With the right PUs you could play nearly any style.

Soloists are a true jem of a guitar. I really like any US Jackson for the quality and attention to detail. They are just ****ed fine guitars that rank with the best of them, if not actually set the standard.

And I just love my Soloist Japan made . They are great guitars too.

Re: Tried a Jackson SL2H Soloist today...

My SL3 is Korean made, but it's still awesome. I really need to try out a true USA made one, cos I can't see how it'd be any better in any meaningful way than mine.

Exactly! That was the first thing I noticed about that guitar. The neck was thicker than I expected. It really helps the sound for sure! The JB/59 combo is almost perfect for that guitar but I like the way the 59 in the neck sounds. I thought about buying one a couple of times but I don't use tremolo very much. Nice guitar. Better than a strat ;)

I would haunt a guess that they use dunlop 6100s, or perhaps slightly smaller (defintely not 6105, they are too wide for 6105s).
If anything, the compound radius annoys me (I play a friend's DK2S, which is 14-16 inch) and honestly think the straight 16 inch makes more sense than compound. If anything, I think Jackson should step it up to compete with the Wizard necks 430mm (16.93 inch) by offering something flatter than the 12/14-16 inch radius necks they have.

And even if the neck shape isn't perfect for you, just get it sanded to your liking, because you shouldn't pass up a beautiful axe like the SL2H and it might even make it slightly less neck heavy too:)

Jackson is known for their smooth fast necks. The SL2h is perfect the way it is and I'm a Les Paul guy!

Dude, I'm gettin' one of those at some point; I just don't have the need right now for one. It's the kinda guitar you play onstage and in a gigging band -- not really to just sit at home a play around with, though that's nice n' all.

(Gotta get me a band... :disappoin:drive:)

Re: Tried a Jackson SL2H Soloist today...

I love me some USA Jacksons. I have two KV2s and they're the most comfortable guitar I've ever played.

I played a SL2HT on Saturday and it was just an awesome guitar. Back in the day I had a SL2H and an SL1.

The build qualities on Jacksons are just perfect.

Re: Tried a Jackson SL2H Soloist today...

Is there an SL2 and an SL2H? SL1 is HSS, SL2H is HH, right? What are the other US Soloists specs?
