I made a visit to the US distributor of Entwistle pickups today and ended up trying out an Epiphone SG with the HV 58 Nickel pups installed. I actually wasn't there to try out pups, but it just happened in the course of my visit.
I must admit, I did not want to like these pickups. I am a Duncan Fanboi and want all other pups to be inferior to them. However, these pups sounded really good to my ears...I could not deny it.
I was playing through a clean Twin Reverb reissue. The clarity & note separation was great. These pickups are very articulate, but the top end is smooth and not harsh. A really good PAF style pickup. Both the bridge and neck model have a really nice clean tone. I only played them clean, no overdrive.
These things are quite inexpensive, too, and looked to be built quite well.
I'll never give up my Duncans, but if a person is looking for an inexpensive, yet very good sounding pickup, these Entwistles seem to be the real deal.
