Triple ceramic mags vs single large and regular ceramic mags?

So my question is whats the sonic difference between having triple ceramic mags vs single ceramic mag, large and regular:headbang:?????

Re: Triple ceramic mags vs single large and regular ceramic mags?

I don't know what you mean by "large and regular" because the middle mag of the triple is standard size. But the triple mag means a much wider magnetic field and a lot more beef.

Re: Triple ceramic mags vs single large and regular ceramic mags?

the 500Ts and invaders i've seen both use a double-thick ceramic in the middle; the side ones are the same thickness.

IME the differences between the regular, double-thick, and triple set-ups are how hard they hit a preamp, and dynamics

at present I can't think of a better analogy than this:
the reg ceramic's a relative lightweight in that it can still pack a hefty punch, but is still capable of dancing around;
the large ceramic's like a heavyweight: hits harder, less light on its feet;
the triple is like a drunken 120kg psycho: it can't box, but it hits crazy-hard and will break bones if given the slightest chance

While we are talking about this......
Anybody tried a 3 ceramic Duncan distortion?

I have. Its an interesting pickup its still basically a distortion but its got a much bigger mid push and a cool grind to it. The highs are pulled back a bit it doestn seem to scream as much as the double thick ceramic does. The only part i didnt like was the bass was a bit loose which kinda drove me nuts but depending on your style it might be actually exactly what your looking for.

It's pretty much a Dirty Finger without the signature Gibson raspy voice, and stupid tight... like that 490T/498T hybrid.

Big ceramics will (usually) be warmer and have a bigger bottom end and a stiffer feel than the normal size. Louder overall too. A8's actually seem kinda similar, but the Big C doesn't roll off the high end as much as the A8 does, and it doesn't seem as midrange oriented. More balanced EQ overall than an A8, but in the same ballpark.

The Triple mag job takes that and goes further, louder, and really stiff (tight). You don't play cleans with a triple ceramic pickup.

Loose bass? Hmmm. How did you orient the spacer mags?

I said a bit loose not like fuzzy loose. I like pickups that are really tight on the low end. As far as orientation goes I just kept the mags in the say way and direction that they came out of the invader.

Re: Triple ceramic mags vs single large and regular ceramic mags?

Weird, seemed tighter, and not by a little, than a normal DD. I put them in with the NS-SN-NS orientation when I tried it, that's how the 500T and Invader (according to Frank, I didnt pay attention) have them installed.

You want tight, put the mags from an invader in a custom.

I was wondering about this, because soon I will be ordering a pickup from MJ where it will me a SH6 with more growly mids (like Invader/Custom growly mids), plus I'm not a fan of alnico for Thrash Metal.

I wonder if the Invader with smaller hex screws and a triple ceramic mag Sh6 are similar or the same????????????????????????? :eek2: :notworthy

Triple mag custom??? Hmmmm..... Hey since you have tried both triple mag DD and small hex screws Invader, which you prefer????

Re: Triple ceramic mags vs single large and regular ceramic mags?

I've played around with a triple ceramic full shred. It didn't seem any tighter or looser than the lil ceramic shred to me. But it was a saturation overload, soooo much distortion. Not muddy at all, just very, very distorted.

Re: Triple ceramic mags vs single large and regular ceramic mags?

So does the invader get looser when the side mags are removed?

Re: Triple ceramic mags vs single large and regular ceramic mags?

Kinda, I wouldn't call it loose, more less stiff. it's also brighter.

Honestly, I didn't really like the triple mag DD or invader that much, I like them both with one big ceramic or an A8 better.

That sounds sick. Ive never used an invader let alone pulled one apart. How are the mags stacked in there and what spacers are used? I love the custom pickup with just about any mag. Its my favorite wind and this triple mag is something ive never though of. Can you elaborate a bit?

Re: Triple ceramic mags vs single large and regular ceramic mags?

The side magnets from the invader are the spacers. The center magnet is big like a distortion. The wires must be rerouted when putting them in other pickups.

Sound like the triple C mag DD is kind of like a BKP painkiller but with more palm muted punch ????:headbang::headbang:

I've never tried a fat ceramic mag without the side mags. Might be interesting. I've also thought about trying a regular thickness ceramic mag in my 500T. I've tried A3 and A5 in it, but I haven't tried the stock 496R mag that I have floating around.
