truss rod adjustment question

hi i'm working on my first guitar. I need to lower the action and I am pretty sure its the truss rod.
I've never done a truss rod adjustment. I know I have to lower it at the saddles but that won't be enough.
which way do i turn it left or right to lower the action thank you- Andrew

p.s. the guitar was made by behringer in the late 2000s
it has .009s a tremolo that has been set up a new nut that is at a playable spot
don't know what else you would need to know thank you

Re: truss rod adjustment question

The first thing you need to do is measure the relief of the neck. You need to have a feeler gauge and a capo to do this successfully. You put the capo on the first fret and hold down the fattest string with your finger on the fret where the neck joins the body. Somewhere around the 17th fret is usually the best spot to do this. Then, you want to take your relief measurement (using a feeler gauge) of the distance between the bottom of the string you are pressing down and the top of the 7th fret.

Then we can begin to talk about adjustments you may or may not need to make to the truss rod.

Re: truss rod adjustment question

i actually just was about to delete this thread because i figured it out and fixed it i had to turn it to the right before i did there was like a one inch gap between the 12th fret and the strings but thank you should i leave this incase someone else needs to know this

Re: truss rod adjustment question

Just make sure to put tension on the neck before you turn the nut (or hex or whatever). Don't use the screw to tighten, tighten the screw after you put the proper bow on neck.

Re: truss rod adjustment question

So you fixed a 1" clearance by truss rod adjustment alone? Not to say it isn't possible, but I'm having a hard time envisioning 1" of clearance between the top of 12th fret and bottom of E, period. Even with a jacked up bridge (fixed bridge) and a backed off truss rod. I admit that I don't know jack about tremolos, but a gap like that would seem to me to have to be due to a really high trem. I cant imagine that being remedied by truss rod adjustment alone.

Re: truss rod adjustment question

i didn't take a measurement

it was about an inch without pressing down

Does not compute. Sorry.

The only logical explanations for the strings being so far above the frets are that the neck has been shimmed wrongly or that the bridge has been raised too far.

At what angle does vibrato bridge baseplate sit relative to the flat top of the guitar?
