TS808 or SD-1

Title pretty much says it all. Looking for a quality item to push my classic 30. Should I go with the Ibanez TS808 RI or a Boss SD-1 possibly with some mods.

Re: TS808 or SD-1

I'd say if you're going for a rock/blues tone the DS-1 would be the way to go.

If you're going for a SRV inspired blues/rock tone, then the TS808.

I'm definately a blues player, but I've always loved the British Blues guitar tones so I like the DS-1 better.

Oops! You said SD-1...not DS-1. I have zero experience with the SD-1.

Re: TS808 or SD-1

I'm looking for something to oush the Classic 30 but it doesn't really have to be smooth but not metal. Kinda Slash Style OD.

I know I am running the wrong amp but I really like the classic 30 and would just like to give it a kick every now and then.

Re: TS808 or SD-1

The 808 is smoother, warmer and slightly compressed in it's tone...

The SD-1 is crunchier, more aggressive in it's character, has more gain, and is overall tighter sounding..

Sounds Like the SD-1 may be what I'm after. I'll consider the TS9 when John Starts modding again. :) What is the general character of the modded TS9. I don't need a full review just a brief description.

Do a search under "Stratdeluxer Mods" etc...

Re: TS808 or SD-1

maybe a marshall blues breaker or a guv'nor?

played one on saturday (guv'nor) and i liked what i heard a lot.. going to try it out again this week and see if my ears werent fooled then.. it sounds cool is built sturdy and has a good button on it.. and it looks sexy hehe

john, are you familiar with these? i think with some tweaking you could get an even better tone from it, with less noise.
do you know anything about em? like after which pedal or amp they might be modeled?

I've never owned an SD-1, but I've owned a couple of TS's and DS-1's over the years. To my ears, I think TS-808/9's sound best with single-coil guitars... to me, that's where they shine. Paired with a Les Paul, I'd go with the Boss.

Re: TS808 or SD-1

Thanks Guys, I think I'll start with a SD-1 then maybe pickup a Ts9 and have John mod both. Well eventualy anyway. :)

I am very familiar with the whole Marshall pedal line...I don't get these pedals to mod as a rule, but I know they of course could be improved upon or tweaked to a guy's liking...Not sure about what they're modelled after? I'd say the Bluesbreaker or the Guv pedals are clones or copies somehow of a Tube Screamer..

And I think your wife deserves a pat on the back, or a round of applause, or something...

Re: TS808 or SD-1

Also, it depends on how you set up your EQ. The Tubescreamers, especially the 808, have a habit of giving a "mids hump," where the bass is cut much more than the mids (the treble, with the Tone control, will obviously be cut). If you like this sound, go with the TS808. If not, go with the SD-1 (that is, if you're not willing to get the 808 modded).

Great post and you are dead on about an un-modded 808 or TS9 with the mid hump..
