Tube amp questions

Due to a lack of funds I've been playing solid state amps for years and could no longer stand it. You guys may chuckle at this, but I bought a Pignose G60-VR yesterday from Musician's Friend. I don't think it's a good idea to buy an amp before playing it but I'll have 40 days to decide whether it's worth keeping. I have found almost nothing but positive things said about these amps and would like some advice as far as replacing the tubes and the speaker.
It's a 60W amp, and I'm planning on replacing the stock speaker with a Weber "pre rola" greenback clone, and getting a 2x12 extension cab. This will show my ignorance on the matter, but what are the rules of speakers wattages and amps. Since the amp is 60W, I assume that using one 25W speaker would put too much of a strain on it? and if so, what speaker wattage should I get? something rated over 60W?
And as for the tubes, it has 4 12AX7's and 2 6L6GC's. Eddie Van Halen's old tone is one of my favorites; what tubes do you recommend I replace the stock ones with?
Thanks for any input you might have; sorry for these novice questions but I am anxious to learn about all of this stuff.

Re: Tube amp questions

I played through a 40 watt tube pignose, it sounded worse than a crappy solid state. Mostly the speaker though. I'd get at least 60 watts of speaker in there. Or build a cab and wire a jack to the amp. Good luck with it. I'm sure with some work it can be a very decent amp.

Re: Tube amp questions

Thanks for the response; As for an extension cab, would two 30W speakers work because they would equal 60Ws? Is that the way it works?
I hear the best things about 25W speakers. If I used two of them, equalling 50W, would that be close enough or would that just blow them out?
