tube amplifier /speaker impedance

If you amp head has 4 Ohm speaker output, what would happen if you plug 8 or 16 Ohm speakers onto it?
Can you burn up your amp if you don't match it's output impedance with the impedance of the cabinet (speakers)?

Is there any difference with the SS amps?
