Tube owners

Alright, I live in a non tube friendly household. I live at home with the rents and my mom is usually in bed by 8pm b/c the wakes up at 2 am for work (god knows why). I'm a total night owl that wakes up at 2 pm and goes to work at 4, so I rarely have a window to fire up the ole orange. In fact, I've thought about selling the bastard, but it sounds soooo good that everytime I play thru it I remember why I have it.

My question is, how big is your tube amp, and how often do you get to play it? I don't mean how often do you hot plate it with the master on 1 and hit it with pedals to push it. I honestly think that tube amps sound the best, but they are sooo loud that they're not that practical today.

ye i feel you man. im in a dorm, college. i know i have to keep my volume down a bit because no matter what you play, no matter how good you are, it's just not right to crank your amp up.

i have owned some amps, far from an expert. peavey triumph, orange tt, now i have engl 530 and mesa recto recording pre with a peavey 50/50. man, i guess for whatever setup i had, i always managed to set the volume low enough so that i dun disturb my neighbors. maybe get an attenuator? also i record a lot, i dun play live, these rack gears are good for that.

Re: Tube owners

I've got a 20W tube head which gets pretty **** loud... Luckily it still sounds amazing at 2-3 volume, so I can work it out constantly :D

I have a Twin Reverb, but I don't play that at home. I play my Pro Junior at home, on like 1.5 volume, 2 at the most. It's too loud at 2 for others to sleep so 1.5 volume is usually what I put it on. The Pro Junior is a 15 watt amp. I'm considering a mod to it so that there's no drive, only clean, but that's another story....

Re: Tube owners

I have two; 140w and 50w. I play both regularily and loud. My neighbours like AC/DC, so I crank my amp really loud, play a little bit of that, then back off the volume a bit so it doesn't seem quite so loud by comparison.

I never play really loud past 8pm, and I never use a tube amp past 9pm. At night I use a Micro Cube, though I'd like a Cube 60 for the improved sound.

I've only had the cops over once, and I think that was because one of my neighbours (who was getting evicted) was pissed off at the world. The cop was alright however.... told me I could play as loud as I want provided I turned it down by 11pm.

Re: Tube owners

I have a 50W tube amp(2*6l6 and 2*el34), but it also has power scaling from london power so it's pretty much cranked all the time. Gotta love powertube distortion.

Re: Tube owners

I have a Mesa Stiletto Ace, which is a 50 watt head. The simple fact is: I can't use it in my apartment unless I dial it way back. I get to open it up at rehearsals and gigs, and that's why I own it. For home practice I either use my Pod XT or play acoustically.

It's an amazing amp with a tone so sweet it gives me chills, but I don't want to get evicted :).

Re: Tube owners

Three of us in a house, we all work regular hours, so if I get home first I crank 'em up. Once they get home I dial it back, but if they go out for a Saturday and I'm home you can bet I'm turning it back up. ;)

Honestly, the POD is one of the best things I've bought though, Quite a while ago I used to have a Zoom 505 always plugged into the computer soundcard to jam and practice, once I got the tube amps I "moved beyond" that stuff and into real amps. ;) I realized I was practicing (literally practicing, not just jamming and having fun) much less because I didn't want to disturb my roommates later (after 9) at night. Even when a tube amp is quiet it's still loud enough to hear throughout the house... Now I'm practicing a lot more, headphones or just through the computer speakers. I think we all need both tube amps and PODs. :D

Re: Tube owners

I have more 10 tube amps rangeing form 30 watts to over 160 watts. After the two businesses next door close (both close at 5pm and are closed on weekends ) I can and do crank my amps loud as I want, which is very loud!
Really I could dime them anytime, since I live alone in a isolated area, but I don't want anyone else hearing it .

Man this makes even less sense than anything you've posted so far! You've got 10 tube amps and you live where you can play as loud as you want, yet you DON'T plug into all of them at once and rock your face off? Maaannnn

I crank my 50w Bassman whenever everybody else is out of the house...most of the time i keep it down on like 2 or use this crappy 10w Marshall solidstate thing i got next to my bed.

Re: Tube owners

I really dig my Rivera. It has one of the most musical and useful master volume circuits I've ever heard. I usually go to 1.5 after dark, but if I'm home alone during the day, you can bet it's not going under 5.

Playing through 12 different tube amps at once makes perfect sence??
