tube practice amps

i'm getting sick of my line6, and i'm ready to get a new practice setup for at home.

would a laney LC-15 paired up with a mesa v-twin pedal be capable of getting tone in the same ballpark as a single recto? if not, what low-wattage tube combo would do the trick?

i'm not looking to spend more than $400 on an amp, and however much a v-twin is, i'll just worry about that later. thanks guys.

Try a Fender Blues Junior. 15 watts, all tube. :smoker:

I agree with the suggestion on the blues junior, but try to find one with a better speaker. I think some come with a Jensen. As far as the V-Twin goes, in my experience, it leans more to the old school Boogie tone as opposed to the newer Recto tone. Still dark and slightly compressed, but with less mid scoop capability, and way looser low end. A Boss Metal Zone, or Danelectro Fabtone or Black Paisley, might get you closer.

I'm a huuuuuge "tube amp snob" but, to be honest, I'm really not into the idea of a tube practice amp (my practice amp is a Micro Cube). When talking about practice amps, I think in terms of an amp that you can play without disturbing the other folks in the house. The only tube amp that I've ever played that could get tone that I preferred to SS/modeling amps at family-friendly volume was a 1W jobber built by Chris Hurley at Doberman Amps. As you might expect, its cleans weren't exactly sparkley, though.

If you're looking for Recto-like tight low end in a small tube amp, I don't know of anything that I'd find acceptable. If you're just looking for scooped high gain distortion without necessarily having "big bottom", a lot of pedals can get you that tone through a relatively clean tube amp.

i don't like my line6 because to be honest, i don't really like the whole medeling concept, and on top of that i can't seem to get it to sound good after owning it for about 3 years, granted i do like the way it sounds going through a good 4x12. i've heard people that get decent tone out of line6 gear, but it just isn't for me i suppose.

i really wasn't sure about the laney, i was just asking about it to throw it up in the air. would those fender amps get a good hi-gain sound with the assistance of some sort of OD pedal? thats basically what i'm looking for, is a small, low-wattage tube amp that can get good hi-gain sounds. it doesn't need to be balls-to-the-wall metal, nor does it even have to have that "scooped mids" sound (i play with my mids at 7).

IM not sure but i myself wnat to try out a marhsal dsl 201, i think tis a tube amp...or the blues junior by fender
