I don't have much experience with these, so can anyone tell me is it worth it? I was thinking about H&K tubeman. There is also a cheap Behringer i saw, not sure of a model, but i guess it isn't really good. Suggestions?

the tubeman is a great pedal and if the clean channel on the XXL is good you should be able to get quite some good sounds out of the rig.

Re: tube preamp pedal with ss peavey xxl

yes, its clean channel is pretty good, but i am afraid of that muddy tone that i heard on tubeman on the H&K site. i play punk with fast riffs most of the time and muddy tone is a no-no. there is also a vox bulldog model, does anyone know how it compares or does it have a different (i mean something that would suit my style) sound? cheers

Consider Damage Control and Radial for tube distortion boxes, which are cool, but the overall sound is going to be more like a hybrid amp rather than giving you the sound of an actual tube amp. Still, it's a cool way to go. I don't have an actual comparison of these units, since I have tried a few, but I'm not a real fan of tube-driven pedals.

Dont limit yourself to tube pedals, there is better(and usually cheaper) SS stuff out there.

well, i usually use boss md-2 with the ge-7 EQ, but i want to get something more 'organic' that still has definition. maybe the tube pedals aren't really my cup of tea after all, but i guess i'll never know 'till i try some of them ;)

There is tons of good stuff out there....just tell what kind of features/sounds/bands you are looking for and watch the suggestions pour in.

Re: tube preamp pedal with ss peavey xxl

hmm...kind of hard to describe the right tone...something like motorhead playing offspring or (hahah i just laughed at myself) or something... i give up :) i have no idea what i'm talking about... :)

Re: tube preamp pedal with ss peavey xxl

I'm not a fan of the pedals using a preamp tube.

The only one I've owned was a Chandler Tube Driver- I've read over and over that they're supposed to be the ultra kickass. My experience was it was a thin, bright and squeally pedal that sounded nothing like "warmth" or "natural overdrive."

Twin Tube Classic may do it depending on the voice you are looking for here.
