I have gotten a rash of Tung-Sol's (12AX7's)that are testing and performing bad from the factory. The EH 12AX7's are still showing up bad. Just a heads up for all of ya'll.

It's been awhile, so in case you don't know who I am, I'm a repair tech in Houston and have been playing for over 33yrs.

That sucks abotu the tubes, I quite like the new TS 12AX7's but on the good side of things you dropped in to spread the good word!

I'll never understand the inconsistency from good tube makers. I see glowing reviews one year, crappy reviews the next, then good reviews.

Is it totally random experiences, or do these tube manufacturers actually swing back and forth between good batches and bad ones?

I saw one tube salesman swear that there were a couple years when Sovtek 12AX7LPS were the best tubes on earth....but only those couple years. I didn't know whether it was a sales pitch, or the truth???

Jeff, Great to hear from you again !! Hope all is well & Happy belated B-day. Yeah, I've responded to a few threads about gett'in some tubes that are turds outta the box ! (tung-Sol ,TAD,s etc.) The only thing that stands between a factory DUD ! And your amp, Is the vendor you buy from. Be sure to check their return policy & customer service reputation. I highly recommend www.dougstubes.com Great guy to deal with, Knowledgeable and only a few miles from where I live. :D

Similar experience with TS and EH 12AX7s. The EHs just started to hum badly if they were used in the cathode follower position, and the TS did the same if installed in V1 of a Marshall Jubilee. Good tone while they lasted though, which wasn't long.

Thanks, I was thinking of doing a full retube of all Tung-sols preamps and EL34s. I've read good things but I'd believe you more.

Jeff, I had 6 out of 7 Electro Harmonix tubes test bad after a shipment in a rack unit from California to Connecticut. The EH tubes have been HORRIBLE for me. My Tung Sols from two years ago are doing great. A few years before that the JJ tubes would go out on me.

Strangely the most consistent tubes I have used are Chinese made. Go ahead flame me, but I've got Chinese late 80's tubes that were abused for years and shipped from California to Russia to Connecticut still working no problems. The no name brands with the "made in china" sticker.
