sorry the search engine has failed me and i just wanted to see if I could get some old advice again. Someone here recommended new tubes for my mesa .50 cal in the effect of Groove Tubes and JJ's. . . . . I just can't remember which ones where recommended as power tubes and which ones as preamp tubes, please help (FYI, a hard rock sound with 2x6L6 and 4x12ax7 thanks guys!!:bowdown

Bump!!, sorry I know the original post is very kind of vague but I''l just ask a new question for a high gain mesa would JJ's or Groove tubes be better??

I like a combination of EH, JJ and GT preamp tubes in my Mesas. I like the JJ EL84 power tubes in my DC-3; and I prefer the S.E.D./Winged C EL-34s and 6L6s in my Mark IIIs and Mark IVs.

I personally don't care for JJ's big power tubes in a high power combo--though they are fine for heads. The all-JJ preamp tube combo was too dark for my tastes.

I happened to like the GT 6L6R's (huge bottles...lol) a little more than the 6L6GE's for rock. Check torres engineering's site, they have some tidbits on this.

It IS a head though, not the combo so you think they'd alright??
