Tubes

What are the main sorta tubes on the market now a days?
I've got a Marshall JTM30. The tubes are dying and i gotta get them replaced.
I'm looking for some tubes that'll give me some nice cleans. I'm not TOO fussed about the distortion however i still need decent distortion, i'm more interested in the cleans of the amp. What are the main ones out there, i don't want 'boutique' tubes cause its just too hard to get my hands on.

Re: Tubes

I have no idea whats in your JTM30. Do a search for Eurotubes and call them. Bob will set you up.

Re: Tubes

BenBenBen,

I thought the JJ's EL34's were warmer in my JTM60 (actually 622) than Winged C Svetlana's. I am guessing you have the Heritage Marshall speaker, which is a bit trebly. You are likely to want a speaker change and some warmer pre amp tubes.

One step at a time though. The bias pot is on the side of the chassis on mine, if you are facing the front, I believe it is the left side. Face that side and if you look into the chassis, you should see a blue pot. It is a "busy" amp inside.

Re: Tubes

You can't go wrong with JJ's. They sound great, they last long, and they're cheap. I've got JJ power tubes in all my amps. I'm more particular with preamp tubes, since I like to hear a bunch in an amp, then leave the winners.

Re: Tubes

Okay. I'm totally new to all this. Can anyone just quickly sum up what that two types of tubes do? E.g. the preamp and the power tubes?
I'm looking at the JJ's site and its all jibberish to me. I'll just stick to JJ's cause it's easier.

Re: Tubes

If i get JJ Power tubes, what preamp tubes do i need. I just looked in the back of my amp, its got 2 power tubes and 3 preamps

Re: Tubes

If you call a tube expert, like Bob at Eurotubes, he can hook you up with the right tubes, based on what you tell him about your amp, it's tone, what you want its tone to be, blah blah blah...

If you don't like him, call TheTubeStore, or Mike at KCANOSTubes or call Lord Valve (if you can find him! :) ) We all have lots of opinions, that's for sure. But since i"m not highly educated on your particular amp, I can only generalize.

Chinese 12AX7 (easy to find as Groove Tube 12AX7-C's) are normally pretty good in Marshall's.

Re: Tubes

All JJ's make for a pretty dark muddy preamp Benbenben. I would limit the JJ's to either one or 2, and then fill the other spots with something brighter, like an EH 12AX7.

Yes, the guys Scott listed are on the net. You can add http://www.dougstubes.com.
