when i bought my MIM Tele i noticed some sloppiness in the tuners... the guy i bought it used from told me he thought the tuners may need replacing... You can feel the tuners gears are quite loose and tightening the screw on the tuner button does nothing... when you try and back off the string in pitch you can move 4 of the 6 tuners a little bit freely before the string starts to move.. Just a hair but it is annoying. The High E string is the worst...
I am thinking of sticking a set of locking tuners on it for easy string changes.... And i just love locking tuners quality in general. But the ease of string changes is the real sell for me. Would any locking tuners on the market be a direct fit without widening the hole and drilling for the middle post on the Sperzels brand? Would the tuners on the new Fender Deluxe series be a better more direct fit?
