TUNG-SOL 7581

I'm interested in putting a quad of these in my 6505+. Would they be safe electrically speaking?

Re: TUNG-SOL 7581

Yes. They're basically just a 6L6, they actually look pretty much exactly like the New Sensor Svetlana 6L6GC, but supposedly there is something different about them.

They are supposed to have more headroom, like the old 7581 did vs 6L6GC.

I'm curious about them too, so if someone has used them tell us about them.

Re: TUNG-SOL 7581

That's exactly why I'm interested, the headroom. If anyone has experience please do tell us about it.

Re: TUNG-SOL 7581

I have a friend who is running some of these in a SLO. He says the differences are very similar to those found when moving from EL34 to E34L.

A bit more headroom, punchier mids and tighter more aggressive low end.

Re: TUNG-SOL 7581

For how that amp is running (as in class) they are very similar as far as the specs goes. What I am seeing is people describe them as cleaner, higher headroom. It would definitely be worth trying! Just remember to bias properly, and rock out.

EDIT: Are these 7581 or 7581A's? The A's have an extra 5 watts of plate dissipation, which would explain the headroominess.

Addendum: Some of the internal grid construction could be a bit different depending on manufacturer, but it's not something you normally need be concerned with.

Re: TUNG-SOL 7581

The original 5150 amps came with STR Phillips/Sylvania 6L6's in them, when those got scarce they changed to the Russian 5881's like every other amp company did. At that time their were no other choices for currently manufactured 6L6 tubes, unlike these days when there are many choices. That was a miserable time for tube users, when the last of the great American/European tube factories closed down. Even Marshall changed to Russian 5881's in their amps instead of EL34's after the last EL34 factory (Tesla) closed down. Marshalls with 5881's? Yuck. So, basically your amp should take those 7581's fine, but you'll need to have it re-biased for them. It will put out more power, too, if it had Sovtek 5881's in it, which only put out about 80% of the power of a good 6L6GC tube (that is, if the Tungsol version is anything like the vintage 7581's).
