turn my Explorer into a metal beast

hello,

I just bought a used Gibson Gothic Explorer with no pups and want to try some Duncans. I've been using EMGs for so long I'm ready for a change.

anyway, I'm an old fart and still like to play old school agro metal of the early/mid 80s:

Metallica - Kill 'Em All
Venom - Black Metal
Accept - Balls to the Wall
Slayer - Haunting the Chapel
Anthrax - Spreading the Disease
Exciter - Violence and Force
Megadeth - Peace Sells...
Overkill - Taking Over
Testament - The New Order
Anvil - Metal on Metal

I'm not sure which of these bridge/neck combos would get me in the ballpark?

JB/59 or Jazz

Distortion/59 or Jazz

Dimebucker/Full Shred (too beastly? :headbang: )

thanks for your suggestions!

Re: turn my Explorer into a metal beast

Distortion/Jazz, or JB/Jazz.

Re: turn my Explorer into a metal beast

What about the Full Shred? I suppose that it would counteract some of the muddiness usually found in all mahagony guitars, and they will also help give a tigth bottom end!

Also, the distortion\59' combo is really nice ;).

Re: turn my Explorer into a metal beast

A friend of mine got the same guitar you have and he put in a Dimebucker and a Distortion.

THAT ROCKS!! :headbang:

Not a versatile setup, though...

Re: turn my Explorer into a metal beast

I'll second that Full Shred idea. They're a great sounding pickup with a little less bottom end to combat that warmth of a mahogany body. Combine that with a '59 neck and you'll be ready to kill.

Re: turn my Explorer into a metal beast

You CAN NOT go wrong with an SH-13 and SH-10N in your guitar.

It's really versatile--you can get it to do some sick metal stuff and, when you play the clean stuff, it doesn't sound harsh at all.
You will not be dissapointed with this pickup set!

Re: turn my Explorer into a metal beast

i have a jb and a jazz/59 hybrid in the neck... i think it sounds great and is pretty versatile...

Re: turn my Explorer into a metal beast

MY MAN!!!

a fellow big booty lover! (there's nothing hotter than a skinny waist and a big caboose) :fing2: :naughty: :smokin:

as for the pups, I think the Dimebucker/Full Shred combo in that big ol' mahogany Explorer would rip some serious metal ass. what kind of amp you using?

Re: turn my Explorer into a metal beast

no pups will turn the axe into a metal beast, if you lack the capacity to turn it into one yourself! metal has to come from your soul and fingers!

once you got that, a JB/59 combo will make you sound like god himself! :D

Re: turn my Explorer into a metal beast

im going with a JB or a DD in my explorer....probably a JB since i already have a DD in another guitar. i actually like the stock neck pickup a lot for distorted stuff, the cleans aint great though

Re: turn my Explorer into a metal beast

I have a Gibson Explorer 1976 and what i advise you is;

Duncan Custom (Bridge) (absolutely fatter+stronger than JB)

Pearly Gates (Neck), Jazz (Neck)

Re: turn my Explorer into a metal beast

hey Crimson stick your guitar in your sister's arse and explore the dark side of the pearly gate , and you'll don't need anymore pickup to make it scream of metal , hahoy !!! :saeek:

Re: turn my Explorer into a metal beast

alrighty I updated my avatar cause it was distracting (disgusting?) some of you blokes :burnout:

hey Iron Dog: BOTTOMS UP my good friend! :beerchug:

also, I picked up a Dimebucker, Distortion, JB, Custom, and '59 (neck) on my lunch hour today. it's the only Duncans he had in stock, but I had him order a Full Shred set. I'm going to try out the Dimebucker/'59 combo tonight. the Dimebuckers looks f'ing cool...I like the looks of those rails.

cheers and thanks for all the suggestions!

Re: turn my Explorer into a metal beast

Once you go Dime, you never go back.

Although it might be a toss between the Full shred and 59 because some people like a "warmer" tone.

Let us know what you think!
