Turning into a pedal guy

First was the polytune, best tuner I've used. Took delivery of an MXR "bass preamp" recently, it's just stellar.

Now I'm just about to pull the trigger on a "bass preacher" :boggled:

I have a ton of expensive sims and stuff like the Helix, but these are better. Not noisy (so far) and easier to get dialed in with.

Am I tempting fate, or is it a temporary phase? Who knows. But it's fun.

Watch out, it's a slippery slope.... ;)

Before you know it you could have had a new guitar/bass and amp! :D

A few years ago I got a nice pedal train board thinking it was big enough for all the pedals I would ever have, now my board is full and I have no less than 4 pedals that cant fit on it now

Re: Turning into a pedal guy

Buying pedals is certainly a rabbit hole, and I am a huge fan of 'whatever gets that sound out of your head', be it multi-effects or individual pedals. Either is certainly fun, and I tend to think you need a good, broad pedal education to get the most out of multi-effects. Otherwise, it is easy to get option anxiety. I sort of grew up in a time where there were really no multi-effects, so when I finally saved up and bought a pedal, I explored every sound that pedal had. It might be 6 months until I was able to get another pedal. If you have 300 pedals dumped in your lap, it is easy to take all of that for granted and not explore individual sounds.

Re: Turning into a pedal guy

You are a bass player, obviously. Fortunately, there are only about 1/1000th of the pedals for bass that exist for guitar. Don't worry.

(Guitar) Pedals don't discriminate bass players, brah! ;)

Re: Turning into a pedal guy

I got into pedals hard core a year ago. It's a lot easier to store 20 pedals than 4 amps. If you can find an excellent clean amp that takes pedals well, you will save a lot of cash long term. Plus pedals are easier to re-sell. People will part with $100 a lot faster than $1000.

I've found two distortion OD pedals that are my go to. Sold the rest. And I'm way more into the modulation stuff. It's fun.

I went from a guitar --> cable --> amp guy to having a really nice set of tone options that inspire creativity I felt I had been losing over the years.

Rabbit hole. Definitely

Yep. And always room for one more.

I actually went the opposite direction. I was such a pedal guy that I bought a Pod HD500 a few years ago for college and to save the every continuing pedal buys. I upgraded to the Helix last year and still find the pull of pedals alluring. I really want some new fuzzes in that box.

Gain pedals do. Tubescreamers and other OD pedals that do wonderfully crunchy things to guitar just don't have the oomph for Sunshine Of Your Love, etc. Of course, I also subscribe to the popular opinion that the Boss ODB3 should have been painted gloss gunmetal and called the Bass Metal Zone. There's gotta be a good middle ground, I just haven't found it.

Now, chorus, reverb, delay, compression, even phasing and flanging, yeah they translate pretty effortlessly to bass.

Re: Turning into a pedal guy

I was a pedal guy for many years; it's such a fun hobby! However, I found that my playing massively improved once I got over my addiction.

Re: Turning into a pedal guy

I love this thread, glad I started it.

@bass player: Lolz, no, I do guitar too (scared)

@Helix: I have one, looking to sell it  It's not bad but it's insane for the price. I also hate using the editor.

Re: Turning into a pedal guy

Almost all overdrives and modulation on the guitar market can be easily modified to suit the bass ;) don't worry, welcome on the bright side of life ;)

Re: Turning into a pedal guy

Again, I play both. Not limited.

The polytune is for both, best tuner I've used regardless of format or price.

The MXR is for my passive basses, but it's good with active too (and guitar)
