Twin vs. Twin

Initially posted as 'ebay help' but bad storms in our area prevented me from bidding, however, I am still interested in the answer if anyone has any info. Thanks

So I'm checking out Fender Twins, the one with the 1/4 power switch that allows you to play it at 25 watts. Are the earlier models, say 1994, much different than the current models. Anyone know if there have been any significant changes made to this amp - I noticed the new one has one input and the older one has two - cosmetics are not an issue, I'm wondering if the gain channel or any tonal differences have been made.
Thanks for any input!

I don't know myself, but I'll give you a bump because I like those amps. They have too many watts for me to ever have needed one myself though.

Re: Twin vs. Twin

I had an early model "Twin", close the the 1994 model. I loved it. It had the most righteous Fender Twin clean I may have heard, in life, ever. Also, it had a "Vintage Drive" setting which was awesome... almost like a more clear, tube-driven, Tubescreamer. I never left that setting. My model also had a Distortion channel that was super intense, but not the greatest sounding. I used it as a boost channel. All in all, a killer amp. I liked it better than the new "Twin" amps, and WAAAAY better than the Twin Reverb Reissues. While we're on the topic, the Hot Rod Devilles have awesome clean tones. Very Twin-ish for half the $$$.

The red knob twin are pretty good amps,I saw Robben Ford play them in the 90,s,Guitar Shorty still plays two of them and sound great.

Re: Twin vs. Twin

of the modern channel switching twins the red knob twin has the most potential i think. the clean channel is nice and the dirty channel is good as a boost. it has lots of gain but the tone kinda gets squashed if you crank it up. the 1/4 power switch is nice but the amp still has a 100w output transformer and is loud!!

Re: Twin vs. Twin

Go for the red knob Twin. If not that, look for a Silverface without a Master volume.

Re: Twin vs. Twin

Howdy,

I gig with my 2 ton red knob "The Twin". It's great for clean (think Buck Owens) and has a loads of headroom. For powertube dirt at reasonable volume, I simply flip the 1/4 power switch. It's not the most satisfying overdrive, but it beats that buzzy preamp nonsense. Good luck!
