Two Q's One thread

Ok, so I just scored a new amp, a used Hot Rod Deluxe for around 425CD,

Upon getting it home, i heard a fundamental tone which was awesome, maybe a tad bright, but still solid, although underneath it, i heard some noise, now it wasn't hum, but seemed almost a buzzy, or notes farting out sound, but it was quiet . . . could this be a dieing tube? I did hear a loose filament when removing a tube, and the tubes hiss with this buzz when flicked, as well, a powertube is beginning to flash purple . . . . . . ????

What tubes would be good to toss in? IM thinking 6v6's in the power section, but what in the pre? Im going for shimmery cleans . . . .

Also, I want to replace the speaker, whatcha think? V30's? Worth keeping the Eminence and getting a 1x12ext? Lastly *deep breath* What about an attenuator? Be good to get some good cranked cleanish tones?

Ty

If the tubes rattle when you tap them, change them. When the power tubes go, you'll know it. Are you maybe just hearing a rattle in the amp somewhere? You mght try tightening up all the screws and bolts.

Put a Texas Heat in there and thank me later.

6V6's? Hmm.... the JJ's are supposed to be able to handle high voltages, but I'd not go there if I were you. Does that amp have an adjustable bias pot?

Other tubes to try if you're trying to lower the headroom a bit... TAD 6L6WGB's, Tung Sol 5881's.

well, first...a HRD is 40 watts with a pair of 6L6's, not 6V6's...Lots of guys seem to like the JJ 6L6, I like the Sovtek, for preamp tubes I relly like the reissue Tung Sol 12AX7. If you want a new speaker go for the Vinatage 30 or try one of the new Eminence. That leaves you with the attenuator question...I love my Weber Mini Mass and I tried a load of attenuators before landing on the Weber...just keep in your mind what an attenuator actually is and what it does.

FWIW, almost ALL of the current production 6L6's I know about have a rattle in them with in a few solid hours of use...

I will say this again...do NOT put 6V6's in that amp...the plate voltages are far to high for 6V6's.

The TAD 6L6 is a nice but FWIW, mine rattle...I have not tried the reissue Tung Sols but I am gonna get a pair soon...

Hmmmmmm good to know . . . . . Scott . . . who makes the Texas Heat . . . . highly recommended speaker?

Eminence makes the Texas Heat.

I'm not very knowledageable about tubes, but I think the buzz could mean either a dying tube, or just a buzzy one. Unless I'm mistaken, some preamp tubes are buzzier than others.... surely someone else can offer a correct opinion?

Re: Two Q's One thread

the hotrod i had had an adjustable bias pot

and jj 6v6's are good till 500v, so those and ONLY those should work fine

but they will cut your clean headroom considerably. That said they'll do wonders for your mids, break up real nice & smooth out some of those highs

as far as the stock speaker - get rid of it

if it was my amp i'd go with an eminence governor or texas heat, or a jensen p12n

i guess the texas heat would be the middle ground between the gov & the jensen
