Type of Nut on Mayer Stratocaster?

About a month ago, I purchased a John Mayer Stratocaster, and when I brought it into a guitar tech he said he thought the nut was bone. Yesterday, I saw an Ebay auction where a guy said he took his guitar in to replace the "plastic" nut on his Mayer with a bone nut. Now I'm confused :smack:

Does anyone know if the nut is plastic or bone? Thanks!

Does anyone know what type comes stock on a regular American Strat? maybe it's the same...

Thanks BB. I posted the same question in the Fender Forum, and they stated they think it's the same as what's on all the other sig. models and quite a few custom shop models (except the EJ Strat), and that it's "a hard, dense, consistent plastic,
not the crappy ABS or polystyrene materials that give plastic nuts a bad name".

Yep, there really isn't one type of nut that is necessarily better than another on a guitar. I've had guitars with plastic nuts, bone nuts, graphite and they all have their own place. Some might say that bone nuts are generally denser, but for all practical purposes I really don't think it makes a huge difference. Obviously, graphite is a bit "warmer" it rolls off the high end a bit, but folks like it because they claim it makes you get more life out of your strings.

Do you think bone nut sounds crisper?

I guess the only one I hear mixed things about is the LSR/ roller nut.
I have the LSR one on my other Strat, and I don't hear any adverse/negative effects on the sound.

i was under the impresssion that corian was a synthetic made from marble dust - i must be confusing it with something

does the fender website say what the JM strat nut is made from?

There is a product used in construction called Corian which is exactly what you describe...I think? :smack:
