Uber Reverb

Updated Slideshow 8/15/09

I'll be adding to this slideshow as the build progresses. It's an AB763 Super Reverb derivative. The "Vibrato" channel is very close to stock except it has the bias-vary tremolo of a 6G16 Vibroverb.

Full credit goes to Doug Hoffman for his version of the AB763 circuit. The layout is my take on Hoffman's basic approach.

The "Normal" channel is not normal. It will have reverb & tremolo. The tone stack is from the 6G16 Vibroverb. With the "Bright" switch on, it will be for guitar. Turn Bright off, and several things change to make it more harp friendly. The "Lo" input is also intended for harp.

Mercury Magnetics iron - ain't they HUGE?

Weber speakers: two 10F150-T and two 10A125

Tubes: to be determined

Cheers,

Chip

Re: Uber Reverb

There are a few more pics in the slideshow. I've gone through the initial testing phase, but the last pic right now has some loose leads that got wired in as I went through my startup testing. Taking it one step at a time is much better than finishing a build this complicated and just turning it on...

As usual, I found a couple of "bugs". A 470K resistor is NOT the same as a 470 ohm resistor ;) Had a senior moment when doing the layout for one of the Bright switches too. Those were easy fixes. So was dropping the B+ voltage a bit more for first two stages of the Normal channel to get more of a brown/tweed tone there.

It is really LOUD even though I'm only playing it through a 1x12" cab right now. The Vibrato channel sounds like it's supposed to - strong & clean Blackface. The Normal channel still needs some tweaking but it's got a little more hair on it with earlier breakup. That was the idea :)

Hopefully its owner will make some soundclips. I'm much better at building things than playing guitar.

Cheers,

Chip

Re: Uber Reverb

Updated slideshow. Amp is done except for experimenting with preamp tubes.

Right now it's got:
V1 - ANOS Rayethon 12AX7 (Normal)
V2 - ANOS GE 12AX7 (Vibrato)
V3 & V6 - NOS Mullard 12AT7 (reverb driver & phase inverter)
V4 - Tung Sol 12AX7 (reverb recovery & gain stage)
V5 - Electrol Harmonics 12AX7 (tremolo)
V7 & V8 - Svetlana Winged C 6L6GC
V9 - JJ GZ34

If the owner makes sound clips, I will be sure to share them.

Re: Uber Reverb

Lovely work Chip. Hope it sounds as good as it looks (I'm sure it does). I've always loved Super Rev's, owned a couple of silver-face's, and they sounded great. Looks like the owner is getting a great amp.

Re: Uber Reverb

With some 'normal' channel mods in BF stuff, I've gone to a 250uF bypass cap to get that tweed low end whoof...
