UGHH Not another ******* superstrat!

Right.

I like metal. Dive bombs sound cool. Drop tuning's, shred, djent, lots of gain literally all of it.

But i cant for the life of me understand why people love superstrats so much?

Come on... I cant be the only one.

So pretty much, am i the only one who doesn't like them, and what guitars do you use instead?

I use a Washburn with a modded invader, a custom tele shape guitar made by Empire guitars (uk) or my Girlfreinds LP.

I'm an equal opportunity guitar lover, but Strats just work for me. I've got a ton of them... everything from 62RI vintage style through to single humbucker floyded guitars. The scale and shape is comfortable for me, I love how configurable/customizable they are and how different the two extremes can sound while playing and feeling similar.

I can see how someone might have a similar feeling about Les Paul's or Teles or one of the off-the-wall brands like Parkers. Or I can see how someone might like a huge variety in guitars so they all feel, play AND sound different.

Since it's your thread, let's see your guitars... :)

Because every time you try to dive dive dive on a ****ty prehistoric 6 screw tremolo it returns out of pitch.:laughing:

I will take and post picks when i'm home aha. I see what you mean about the trem though... thats said, you dont need a superstrat to have a floyd... or just get a digitech whammey?

Ahh see i like to have lots of guitars (yes, including superstrats. I just don't play them), i feel like every guitar has a niche in the sound it makes and that you'll never find that "do it all" guitar.

I am a partially reformed Fender hater.... their shapes give me a bad vibe, and I don't care for most single coil tones, however I do like the Japanese Ibanez S series guitars.

I can look past the Fender roots a little and see the reasons some people like them though. A few things I can say that's good about the Super Strat is that it's decent light, the body is comfortable standing and sitting, the tuners are in my favorite place, and if you're going to be on stage for like 4 hours it's fairly easy on your shoulder, and a proper trem does make it a functioning guitar instead of the mostly crap Fender trem.

There are too many flavors of Superstrat available, to just say you don't like them. They can have Floyds, fixed bridges, bolt-on, neck-through, set neck, any scale you want... HSS, HH, HSH... Are we talking a San Dimas, or a Soloist, or an RG or...

I actually like classic superstrats, despite the fact I've never really wanted one. They are simply "working mans" guitars -> Made purely for use without trying to look anything "special" or shiny.

I don't really like that much PRS type superstrats (you know what I mean by that) or LP's though. They just seem pretty much the opposite -> Very polished and "artistically" designed. They don't seem like they're made to be tools.

Because the Strat body style is the most iconic and popular electric guitar body style. Remember, the Strat nearly put Gibson completely out of business.

Over the years music changed and the needs of the players have shifted. Everybody wanted to play their favorite looking and playing guitar but with modifications that suit their musical needs. Leo Fender's design allowed for this to happen with relative ease compared to any other guitars at the time.

The peak of this happened when EVH took his Strat and made a Frankie out of it. Suddenly everyone wanted a Strat that sounded like a burning Les Paul (at the time anyways, remember we talkin' 1978 when Strats VERY rarely had humbuckers in them) but still played like a Strat with some playability upgrades and could dive bomb (when Eddie later on got a Floyd installed).

What else can we say? They have the most popular look, they have a tried and true playability, they are relatively easy to make and modify... just the whole shebang.

Back then they were also known to be versatile: an HSH super strat with all the split wiring was your best bet for a jack-of-all-trades guitar. Of course nowadays with all these new wiring styles you can get versatility out of any guitar but the tradition and habits stuck with players.

It's gonna be popular for many more years to come, buddy! Sorry! =P

The DigiTech is a toy. Occasionally a cool toy, mind you, and it can do some effects a Floyd can't (mostly extreme ones), but it isn't nearly as fine tuned or as musical, at least not in the approach most people have to them (I know Jennifer Batten did some pretty intense stuff with it, but I've never heard it). Try to cop a Brad Gillis solo with a DegeTech and you'll see what I mean.

Well, in my case I just bought a 2nd hand Charvel Por Mod So Cal in Snow White, hopefully it will get to me before the weekend.
I wanted a Stratocaster type guitar because I had one in the past and it was really ergonomic and fun to play. But there were a few things about the configuration of the "standard" stratocasters -mine was an HSS MIM road worn- that I didn´t like and/or wanted to changed.
1) I wanted a Floyd Rose with locking nut. I don´t have any guitar with this combination and I wanted to fill this gap so I can do dive and pull without losing tuning.
2) I wanted a guitar with 2 humbuckers. The strat I had was an HSS guitar, and the difference in volume when going from pos 1 to the others was noticeable. The single coils are a tad weak for what I want to play most of the time, and although having those sounds available is something I wanted for some things, for other things I just want more. Plus the middle pickup gets in my way when I am picking. Therefore, 2 humbuckers with coil splitting is what I was looking for. I can have the full power Humbuckers for most of what I play, and still some straty single coil options for the other stuff.
3) The vol-tone-tone configuration in my strat made no sense to me. There was individual tone controls for the middle and neck single coils, but no tone control for the humbucker. I didn't get that. 1 master tone + 1 master volume makes much more sense to me.
4) The standard placement of the volume control in the stratocasters is a pain for me. Because of the way I play, it was very common hitting the vol knob unintentionally, reducing the overall volume when I didn't wat to do it.

For all these reasons (plus I was fond of getting a white guitar with maple fretboard) for me it made total sense getting rid of the strat and getting a superstrat instead. It offers the famous, nice looking, light weigh and ergonomic stratocaster type guitar, but without the inconveniences that a "normal" stratocaster has for my style and plus all the nice features I was looking for. On paper it is exactly what I want. Can´t wait to find out how it behaves on my hands.

I kind of feel the same when I see another brand-X single-cut LP knockoff with nothing new or cool about it. lol

Yeah, but guitar players are a pain in the ass to please. Too avant garde of a design and everyone goes "eww wtf that's so weird looking!", too much like a classic design and we all go "pffft another knock off". A manufacturer just wants to sell as many guitars as possible, and well... knock offs seem to sell a whole lot better than weird looking stuff, so... yup

Just look at how well Ibanez is doing and how Parker basically went under. You don't see a whole lot of Steinbergers either and they even started making some strat-looking guitars towards the end.

Well, Ibanez kicked of doing strats, but they got pretty well on their own in the 80's and have succeeded ever since.

They've always done very well for themselves for sure. The RG series was something else though, they really skyrocketed after releasing the RG.
