Ultimate Attenuator

Re: Ultimate Attenuator

no idea I think it's more than -30db but if you're interested, there are probably better attenuators for the money.
AFAIK this attenuator works by padding the signal with a resistor and then amplifying it to your desired level with a small solid state amp. I've never used one but it *sounds to me* like there are cheaper, better built, more reliable, more transparent attenuators out there. Some people on the web have really knocked the build quality, the fact that the resistance seems fixed at 32Ω (so it could be bad for your amp if you run 4Ω) while some have said it sounded great. So in the end you may like it or you may not.

I would get a Weber and be done. I have their cheaper model that is rheostat-based and it sucks tone at super low volume but most of the time it sounds great. The MASS series has a real speaker motor in it that helps the attenuator react to your amp they way your amp would.

Re: Ultimate Attenuator

Thank you very much for the advice. I'd had Weber MASS 150 in my mind as well. Whereas good reviews, I've heard that someone's amp broke down using Weber MASS. I've read that attenuators might damage the power amp. I'm afraid of that possibility.

Re: Ultimate Attenuator

It's basically like any time you are playing your amp full tilt as many do with an attenuator, you run the risk of damaging your amp. There's nothing inherently dangerous about attenuators other than you're just running your amp harder than usual.

Re: Ultimate Attenuator

If I remember correctly, the Ultimate Attenuator is a re-amp device. Amp goes into a load, line level taken off it and re-amplified via solid state amp.

Re: Ultimate Attenuator

I have never been so totally excited by a product only to completely lose interest as quickly as I did in this thread.

Still can't find a better option than the Mass 200...

I didn't know about the ultimate attenuator before this but I had to look it up, and I thought oh cool I haven't heard anyone on the SD forum mention these. A quick googling and I was like... nah man.
