Ultimate Repair Job

This guy goes to a lot of trouble to repair an Epiphone Les Paul with a busted-off headstock. Check it out (the first 40 seconds are an intro).

Re: Ultimate Repair Job

Jeez, that's crazy. Don't know if I'd have enough confidence to use a sharp knife like that freehand so close to unprotected binding/neck wood

Re: Ultimate Repair Job

i'd watch that show every week if it was in english and had more descriptive voice over of each step

thats crazy cool work to add the scarf joint so meticulously ... then the peghead face veneer transplant ... never saw a guy use a pocket knife to whittle a head stock either

cool to watch - thanks for sharing

Re: Ultimate Repair Job

Guy's like him must love the fact that Gibson heads break at the drop of a hat.

Re: Ultimate Repair Job

I just about laughed my ass off when I saw that guy freehand bandsawing the veneer off the headstock

Re: Ultimate Repair Job

The end result looks lovely but it scared me to death seeing him use that knife
:scratchch

Re: Ultimate Repair Job

I didn't make a video, but did essentially the same thing on a Gibson a few months back.

I didn't use a knife to do the carving though. I prefer a chisel.

Re: Ultimate Repair Job

What a feeling it must be to be good at something that you love doing.
Awesome work.

Re: Ultimate Repair Job

Well, musical instruments cost a lot in Brazil, so there's no other option than send'em to the experienced Luthier like this guy seems to be when something bad happens.

A job like this one would cost more than the guitar itself, being an Epi, so you wouldn't even think about get it repaired. You just look for another one in E-bay, right?

But if the guitar IS a legit Gibson Les Paul, the music changes 180°, as the market value of the instrument is high.

I may be an idiot, but even if the price is the same, I'll always choose to give my money to an actual human being to get it fixed rather than getting a new(used) one.

Congrats to the guy for a job well done and thanks to Evan to share this with us.

Re: Ultimate Repair Job

I've seen several videos about this guy. Like watching him build a bass with nothing but a hand saw, chisel, file, and hammer (think I'm joking). The man is a woodworker and an artist, who just happens to be good with guitars, :D

Dude blows my mind. He could probably make an Esteban play well.

I would love to see you repair that, must be really a cool feeling to repair something in that manner and it to look like new. Good job!

Not freehand - there's a guide fence. Bandsaws, when properly set up, are pretty precise things.

There's also a lot of steps not shown - the guy is clearly very skilled, but he's hiding some very important parts of the process and just showing the rock 'n roll bits. :D

Re: Ultimate Repair Job

Yeah....uh the big mojo voodoo doll chisel and the netherworld workbench;)
He is just good with his hands.......
And why show off the experience for free????
I would not do that either!

Considering the amounts of trees that have been cut for guitars, the amount cut daily, as we speak, the material spent on every component of each guitar and their resulting carbon emissions....I +1 that.

Yeah yeah yeah bring on the flame about how I'm not chaining myself to the trees etc etc...at least I do the small things haha!
