unconventional mods to guitar/pickup configuration

I always have these crazy ideas about a guitar experiment like having a HSH LP with a suspended single coil at the neck or something like that. Is this possible? I'm sure it can be done using something similar to one of those chrome pickup covers on old P basses.

What about SHH?

Why not HHH and make them all splitable and then use a 5 way switch instead? :13: Insta strat at the pull of a pot killer LP tone at a push. Not really something I would like. But, would be fun to wire up. Next guitar I get will be an Epi LP and I am going to split the neck pickup..................as to the thread question.........I bet there is. I could probably think of a way if I had the guitar and pickup to look at in front of me.

I modded a les paul studio for a customer. The guitar had two sd 59s that I rewired to 4 wire connection. I installed two push-pull pots so the neck or bridge or both could change from Series to parallel by pulling either pot. I sounded pretty good.

tried that already with my ibanez. See my sig, I have 3 buckers in there and I ran into a bunch of problems.

#1 with a push/pull pot for splitting, when it's raised it interferes with the whammy bar.

#2 there are not enough posts on a 5 way switch to get all the combinations, one position always had to be sacrificed.

I was trying to get:

Humbucker mode: neck, neck/middle, middle, middle/bridge, bridge

and the same for the single coil mode just with the coils split by the push pull.

the best I could do was get most of that and in the 2 position I had to leave the bridge full humbucker and split the middle. I decided in the end to just go with traditional 5-way switching with the buckers cause it was the only thing I could get right and I ended up not using the split because then I couldn't use the tremelo.

Re: unconventional mods to guitar/pickup configuration

yea but i guess it's not fair to compare the tone of half a humbucker to a single coil, nothing can beat the real deal. just wondering if you could actually suspend a pickup over the strings like that

I get what your saying! Old lap steels (GretshI think) had a similar pickup design your describing. I think it was called a "horseshoe" pickup, though I may be mistaken.

You bet it would! I don't think I would stop laughing! :laugh2:
