Under/Over winding a pickup?

Hey guys. I'm just curious as to what may happen tonally to the tone of a pickup that is overwound more or underwound. I have a JB sitting around that I was thinking about taking some turns out of it for experimentation, but would just like to get some theories and thoughts before I do so.

Re: Under/Over winding a pickup?

I might be slightly mistaken, but as I understand it:

overwinding: more mids, more lows, trimmed treble

underwinding: less mids, less lows, more clarity

Be careful !!!! trying to remove the amber cellophane tape that is used on duncan pickups ,possibly can destroy your pickup ,It is quite sticky & possibly not ideal for tinkering with

^ This is correct. This has been my experience. Also overwound has more output, underwound has less output.

And if you are going to throw away $100 by destroying a pickup trying to reduce the winds, why not just spend the $100 getting a lower wound pickup and have two to compare?
