Under wound (6-7k) p90 or mini hum?

basically my Gibson p90 (8-9k) in the neck of a telecaster over powers and is much darker than the TV Jones classic plus filtertron in the bridge.
I'm thinking maybe an underwound p90 would be a better match as I really don't get along with filtertrons in the neck position. Would a mini humbucker be a better option? Anyone mixed either with a filter'tron with success?

How low have you tried adjusting the P90? How close to the strings is the TVJ?

P90 and mini humbuckers are two distinct sounds. (The Firebird is different again.) Is your priority a specific tonality or a level match?

If your neck PU cavity is deep enough, I would be tempted to try an STK-T1N.

Re: Under wound (6-7k) p90 or mini hum?

The neck p90 is as low as it will go which is almost flush with the scratch plate (deep enough for a stack?) , and the TV Jones is almost as close to the strings as I can get it. I want to have a better volume and EQ balance so I can use the same amp settings for both pickups.

The reason I initially put a p90 in there was the growl, one thing I think p90's and filtertrons both have. underwound p90's are harder to find than mini humbuckers which normally come off the shelf between 6 and 7k so I thought that might be the easier option.

Talk to zhangbucker

This or downwind the Gibson. Thats an easy job. Just peel off the plastic wrap of the bobbin and wind down roughly 1300 turns of the wire and resolder and rewrap. I have done it several times on humbuckers and P90s. While you are at it, you also could swap out one magnet (both are a5) with a A3 or as i did with an A4.

Well, you've already tried the pup height adjustments that I would have recommended. I'd try putting in a couple A3 mags first and see if that helps enough. It's simple, cheap and effective. That should reduce the output significantly.

Cheers guys. I have a few zhangbucker pickups, I wouldn't hesitate to order more from him, great pickups!
I don't think I'm patient or confident enough to unwind the p90 although it does sound like a viable option. Twin A3 sounds interesting, that's the one mag I haven't had much experience with but worth a try, I have ONE somewhere. thanks guys

the antiquity II mini humbucker and fb pups are great sounding, not dark and not overly powerful. they sound wonderful and would probably match really well with the tv jones

Thanks, I have had my eye on those for a while, but if I can make it work with the p90 I've already got it will save me buying a new expensive pickup :)

Re: Under wound (6-7k) p90 or mini hum?

Winding P90 down into the 6's will help some but the main problem with a P90 in the neck of any guitar with a low-wind or otherwise bright/thin bridge pickup is mainly the magnets. A P90 has two bar magnets in it which makes for a very wide magnetic field which means it sees the longer wave lengths of the lower freq's very well -- too well in this context. The solution? Narrower magnets.
