Under wound Fullshred

I have an under wound Fullshred b, it's at 12.78 Ohms. It's a bit bright, maybe even shrill. If I changed the hex heads to filister screws, it should give it more bass response right? What about using a 250k pot? Thanks in advance for your input. It's in an alder body Charvel with a pickguard and bridge only hum.

Re: Under wound Fullshred

Your pickup seems a perfect candidat for an alnico 8 magnet , it would cure the shrilliness , add low mids punch and power .
After you can always tweek the pole pieces ; hex pole focuse the sound on mids with bity attack , fillisters give more bass and treeble with a fatter attack .
You can even put some shortened fillister to be in the middle .

Re: Under wound Fullshred

Try the 250K pot first since it's an easier swap. If that doesn't work then it's time to either swap out the magnet or the whole pickup.

Re: Under wound Fullshred

Compared to a 500kΩ, a 250kΩ volume softens everything a notch including the volume taper. That works nice in some guitars, giving them fuller midrange. However, the output drops slightly along with the treble. The way I hear it, it changes the spectral balance and dynamics but does not really add any bass that wasn't there before.

Re: Under wound Fullshred

If the Duncan sounds shrill, it may be due to the polarity of the other pups, if there are other pups wired into the circuit.

I can't imagine a full shred sounding shrill, I have one and it's got high mid range and bass, but no crackly treble.

It excels at super high overdrve because it won't fizz out.

Otherwise, if you know that someone actually hacked into the wiring and stripped some of it off, you're better off just buying a new or used one, and letting that one go.

.045 caps might tame the tone if it's really shrill, or try .033. What is the cap value of the tone pot cap, if there is one? if it's like .010 or .022 it's probably going to sound too trebly...

I'm not sure of your pup config, is it HSS? if there are other single coil pups in the middle/neck position they may have a different polarity.
This would mean you'll have to reverse the wiring of the hot(lead) and ground of the neck/middle pups, in order to use the Duncan properly.

You should probably try reversing the wiring anyway. look up the wiring diagrams on the duncan web site, and make sure you have some sort of facsimile of what's suggested. And if that doesn't work, experiment by reversing the lead and ground wires...

You may end up with a thinner sounding middle position sound, but at least your full shred in the bridge will sound better. Another option is to install it upside down (so the words Seymour Duncan appear upside down on the top of the pickup) so the slug polarity is reversed, that may end up sounding better if the pickup had the windings modified on the South pole... That can be done in addition to reversing the wiring. I have a feeling you'll like the sound of that, and it's probably why someone removed the winding, they intended to use it upside down...

I actually think you knew that. Why people post **** like this I don't know...

He said it's bridge only, so no other pickups to be out of phase with.

And why are you being so rough on the guy for asking a question?

Re: Under wound Fullshred

Thank you very much for the suggestions guys. I appreciate it. Sometimes, we just come on here to pick the brains of those who have more experience than we do. For the most part we're just trying to be resourceful and circumvent reality.

Whoa back the truck up there bub...

Slug polarity? You know the fullshred doesnt have slugs right? Now pray tell please explain how turning a pickup will change the polarity? If just flipping the pup around changed it wouldnt you polarity change if you flipped your guitar upside down? The fullshred has symetrically wound coils there is NO reason to flip it at all. It wont do a thing to change which direction the wire is wound in, which is what determines your polarity.

amazing you post this... how shall we call it... bad information then you end with a jab at the guy? Rich dude... rich
