Under wound Phat Cat??? Or something like it???

HI! I'm looking for a under wound Phat Cat or some other Humbucker sized P-90 but you probably got that from the title??? It's going to pair a vintage wound Arcane Humbucker that's going to sit in the bridge position of a double bucker G&L A.S.A.T. This little beauty weighs in @ about 8.75K, so for the neck I'm hoping to find something in the 7.9k-6.5k range? Any suggestions will be much appreciated & if you think there's another true Humbucker that will give me a very nice clear sound while playing clean & vintage wound, obviously, please chime in as well & tell why you would chose this over a H.B. sized P-90! Thanks guys!!!!

Hit up Zhangbucker for a pair of custom p90/humbuckers. Wound to your specs, and a LOT more accurate to p90 tone.

I've got a bunch of Phat Cats; took all the A2's out, which for me is the wrong magnet for both the bridge and neck (bridge weak/neck dark). The neck's wound pretty hot for A2's. Once you put in other alnicos, they sound like P-90's (which apparently wasn't the original intention). In the neck slot I like an A5/A5, A5/A4, or A5/A3 combination for Phat Cats and P-90's.

There are a number of other HB-sized P-90's, one of the most popular here is GFS Mean 90 (not Dream 90).

Intriguing…

What EXACTLY was the original intention??? Can someone from SD reply to this?

In various threads, a few members have said that Phat Cats were intended to be a single coil drop-in for HB slots, but that they weren't shooting for a P-90 sound. Not sure if they got that from Duncan. Phat Cats were one of the early retro-fit single coils, but most other manufacturers since have gone for truer P-90 tones, probably because there's a hard core segment of P-90 lovers and few guitar models with them. The guitar models most likely to get HB-sized single coils put in them are LP's, SG's, 335's, and hollow bodies, as many of them had P-90's back in the 1950's/1960's. But to my ears, that's not where Phat Cats (in their stock form) are at their best. In brighter woods the neck model has more treble and definition. I'd love to see Duncan expand the Phat Cat line with different magnets and windings. It's certainly a concept that can be expanded.
