:headache: How did Jimmy Page get that weird sound from his guitar. Ex: Whole Lota Love, Heartbreaker. Is it distortion, or the kind of pickups he ueses. so confusing.:yell:

Re: Unique sound of Jimmy Page's guitar

Alot of it was a Telecaster through a Marshall or Vox, mic'd and eq'd to emulate a Les Paul

Re: Unique sound of Jimmy Page's guitar

He used small amps early on. Fender Champ
Everything said in the previous post is also what I have heard as far as the tele goes.

Re: Unique sound of Jimmy Page's guitar

I'll also add an old Sola Sound "Tone Bender" didn't hurt either.
Kind of makes a Tele sound like a Les Paul.

Re: Unique sound of Jimmy Page's guitar

he was a whiz at manipulating mic placement to get his tonal effects too

Re: Unique sound of Jimmy Page's guitar

He did not EQ it to sounds like a Les Paul, he just EQ'ed it...it sounds fatter than a Tele but I woudl not say it sounds liek a Les Paul and Im sure he wasn't trying to copy a Les Paul tone.

The whole first record was a pretty much stock Tele into a Supro with a vox wah and a tone bender in line as well as an echoplex...no special pickups...just a good guitar/amp combo and good recording skills.

There ws also no Fender champ on record, in fact Jimmy didn't use anything on the first record except that Supro.

Re: Unique sound of Jimmy Page's guitar

I did hear that he used a small Gibson amp too, like my Gibson GA5 on his other records.

Re: Unique sound of Jimmy Page's guitar

Don't forget about stopping the top horn of a Leslie and micing that into the mix as well.

But even if you would walk into the studio where he was recording, yanked the guitar from his lap and started playing, you wouldn't sound like him.
On the other hand, if he'd yank a Squier out of some kids hands and start playing through a Valvestage, he'd still sound like Jimmy Page.

Re: Unique sound of Jimmy Page's guitar

I have my tele wired up with a push/pull for out of phase option in the middle position, and with some amp overdrive and a fuzz pedal added in, it NAILS the Whole Lotta Love solo.

Re: Unique sound of Jimmy Page's guitar

Pact with Satan. Not a good thing in the long run (i.e.; Robert Johnson, etc.) but it couldn't hurt if what you really want is the tone or the chops...

DING! DING! DING! DING! We have a winner. I am just amazed at how much bogus information there is about his sound. Guitar, Amp hands and an occassional Wah! The first record has always been my favorite!

Re: Unique sound of Jimmy Page's guitar

Whole Lotta Love and Heartbreaker are on the second album. Wasn't he using a Les Paul by then?
