Univox + valve jr = :)

I've been messing around with getting my home studio relocated, and finally got some stuff recorded.

The songwriting is mediocre at best, needs lyrics, the acoustic guitar is too thin, and I screwed up when I bounced the drums to two tracks and effectively squashed the toms right out of the mix, but the electric tones I'm happy with. Rythym is my Univox SS combo and the lead is my Valve Jr through one of the 12's in my Ampeg combo.

That's funny man --- I just realized you have a "sound."

I have some of your old stuff from a hundred years ago (remember "Red Cavalier"?) and it's got the same overall sound.

If you were a top 40 band, you'd have people saying "that sounds like Vetteboy and the Driveshafts!"

By the way, you make the Valve Jr. sound better than anyone I've ever heard.

That's the cool part. Here's my Valve Jr. recipe:

- guitar
- cable
- valve jr (stock)
- ampeg speaker
- one SM57

That's it...season slightly with a touch of delay to open it up a little bit. There's not even any post EQ on any of the guitars in that clip.

Funny you mention Red Cavalier...that track is still around, and probably sounds similar because it's the same Univox amp. :approve: That song is going to part of the ever-elusive album project I've been trying to put together for a while now, which will mostly be stuff of that nature. More oriented towards rock/blues though.

Must be the speaker --- and how much you have the Jr. cranked --- I'm assuming that it's cranked to "eviction" level?

Haha...there's no 'eviction' level to be had with a Valve Jr. That was recorded at about 70% on the amp volume knob, and the sound level is MUCH lower than what I usually play my Ampeg at when I'm just jammin' around. When I'm messing around with the Jr. I usually have a mic on it just to get some volume boost.

That's the nifty thing about the Valve Jr though, it's really easy to drive it into a nice smooth tube crunch without even rattling the windows a little bit.

I still want to build a speaker cab for the Jr so I don't have to keep swapping wires around, but now you've got me concerned that I'll lose the mojo it's got if I mess with it too much. :(

He was probably suggesting that option so you could use your current speaker with both your Valve Jr. and your Ampeg
