Unknown/unbranded "Les Paul Relic" ID

Hello everyone, I was just in my local music store and found this in their used section:

Normally I would have chalked it up to being some no name off branded junk guitar, but they had it for sale for $530 bucks. Anyone have any ideas of what it could be? It has no serial number, no brand, not markings of any kind. While I usually like this store, they also had a used "Les Paul Custom Copy" which was a one pick up counterfeit Gibson for sale for $750 when I went in. I can only guess that they got screwed on it and now they are trying to get their money back... it had a piece of paper on it saying how great of a guitar it was, and what a deal, etc. I will get a picture next time I go get strings.

What's the back of the headstock look like? Is there an obvious joint?

Being a copy doesn't mean it will cost less than a Gibson. Recent prices of 70's/80's Japanese copies are an example.

I am talking about two different guitars here. The only problem I have with the other guitar is that there is no way I'm going to pay $750 bucks for a guitar that says "Gibson" on the headstock but isn't a Gibson. I'm just curious about the guitar in the pictures because it was interesting looking.

Re: Unknown/unbranded "Les Paul Relic" ID

It looks like some type of "kit guitar" to me.

Yeah, I like the body also, that's why I'm so interested in what it is. It looks almost like it's unfinished, or very, very thinly finished. I guess I will ask them about it when I come in next time. They usually mark their guitars up at least 30%, so they probably only want about $350 for it. I had actually forgotten about their markup until now, they do it to literally everything in the store. When I re-read my first post, I realized it sounded like I was trying to talk down about their store, but to clarify, I really wasn't, I actually use this store exclusively for things that I don't want to buy online...

Its actually illegal for them to knowingly sell a counterfeit gibson. I'm not one that would do anything to invite the man into my life.

Re: Unknown/unbranded "Les Paul Relic" ID

I thought it was only illegal if it wasn't labeled as a counterfeit? Actually, I guess that wouldn't make much sense...

If labeling them as counterfeit was all it took then you would see ebay and other places flooded with counterfeit products not just guitars.

Its actually worse if they label it as counterfeit because they are admitting they know its fake and yet they choose to sell it anyways. If they didnt label it they could at least try to plead that they didnt know it was fake and they thought it was real.

BTW sorry not trying to derail your thread... just wanted to mention their selling the counterfeit wasnt the smartest thing to do.

No worries, I've actually always been very interested in learning about counterfeiting, especially when it comes to guitars. It seems like I read on here or The Gear Page that it wasn't illegal to resell a counterfeit guitar as long as it wasn't represented as a real guitar by the brand in question, but as you said, that would never work. I must have misunderstood what the person was trying to say when I read it.

Yeah that rumour got a lot of traction when a particular youtuber who did a ton of chinese knock off vids posted saying that if you werent a business and you sold person to person and made them aware that it was fake that you wouldnt have a problem. But its just not true. This is exactly how they sell fake rolex's and LV bags in the streets and its still illegal and people still get nicked for it.

Just saying hey this is fake to someone doesnt cut it. The merchandise still violates the trademarks of the company being knocked off and you just knowingly sold it to another person.

If you are doing a person to person sale its unlikely that you would draw the attention of the authorities. (though using a easily searchable medium like the net is a bad idea) so no people arent being busted left and right for this sort of thing. But it is becoming more common and the authorities are looking for it more. Many people now who order the guitars from china never recieve them as they are stopped by customs and confiscated.

Oh interesting side note. Its NOT illegal to buy or possess a counterfeit... Only to sell them.

Looking at the lower horn, it's definitely familiar. LTD? Agile? I dunno, there's more pop-up Chinese off-brands than legit brands these days.

Re: Unknown/unbranded "Les Paul Relic" ID

I was thinking sanded down LTD HS also after looking at a couple videos with LTDs in them.
