Unveiling of my new Ultimate Marshall Fender rig!!!

Gear Ho
Alright, I think I've finally finished my Marshall/Fender rig.

A couple months ago, I walked into my local GC and spotted an amp that has always been one of my favorite Marshalls - a 1984 JCM 800 4103....the 212 combo version of the popular 2103. This is the good single channel one with 5 big filter capacitors.

I was dumbfounded that I'd found one in dead MINT condition, besides the usual faded cloth and dirty tolex.....but no imperfections at all. I fired it up in the store, and everyone came to have a look at the best sounding Marshall in the store...easily. I worked out a deal at $800 out the door, although I had the horrible 30 day waiting period! Uhgghh.

A month ago, I brought it home and immediately went to work on it. I tore it completely apart and detail cleaned everything. After removing the logo and masking the badge, I dyed the grillcloth with diluted liquid shoe polish in a spray bottle. I worked the same solution into the tolex after cleaning it. It turned out perfect!

It came with well broken in G12T-75s that sounded totally authentic to the era, but more on that later.

I thought about changing the 6550's for EL-34's, but the big bottles sounded so good, I bought a new set of Tungsol 6550's, leaving the option for two running at 4ohms...half power. This power section now sounds like a brick sh1t house! So fat, so killer.
The pre section was fitted with some of my old stock Mullard ECC83's. They beat my modern 12AX7's in this amp, because I'm trying to make this the ultimate Marshall.....from creamy 60's tones to a fat and crushing 80's rock tone.

I biased the Tungsol 6550's to 39mA, which is a decent bias for them....not too pushed to heat up the chassis, and definitely not cold like I got the amp. GE 6550's with a 22mA bias is how it came to me.

Now, about the 74 Fender Pro Reverb....the best Fender amp I've ever owned....and I've owned a lot. One year ago, the owner of my favorite BBQ restaurant 'The Bear Pit' listed the amp for $700, and I jumped on it. When I went to his house, I learned that Aspen Pitman from Groove Tube was his cousin! This 74 had been completely gone through and turned into the ultimate blackface Fender by both Aspen Pitman and Greg Leon....Dokken's first guitarist, and well known LA amp tech.
It's got handpicked tubes, blackface circuit, Jensen C12N/beam blocker and Emi Swamp Thang. Aspen probably changed the cloth to old stock 70's cloth. I added a blue jewel and maybe a pre tube or so. I'd say it's in 95% cosmetic condition.

Here they are together. 1984 JCM800 4103 looking like it just got pulled out of it's carton with properly biased Mullards and Tungsols. 1974 Pro Reverb blackfaced silverface.

But this wasn't enough. I really wanted to get the most out of the Marshall, using richer sounding speakers than the G75's. I was considering a new Celestion Creamback 65 or 75, and maybe a V30 next to it. I found a Creamback 65 for $90 yesterday, and installed it today. The amp really came alive, and I was stoked!
Rich beautiful mids, big tight lows, and smooth highs. The EQ on the Marshall got better....the Creamback 65 is a thicker sound than the G75, but the G75 has nice bass and high end cut, so I think I'll keep one of them in it on the left.

The Creamback is basically a 65W Greenback with bigger tighter lows. You Marshall guys will love either of the Creambacks! This JCM800 really sings now. I think I may be done tampering with it. I'll post a pic of the Creamback in the amp later, as well as much better photos.

I'm also trying to get the engineer at the studio where I keep some of my amps to let me do some clips at high volume so I can capture them doing their thing....especially with a few OD pedals that sound best with both amps.

Awesome stuff Joe. Greenbacks,.and their descendants are the ultimate speakers for classic Marshall tones AFAIC! you should try a creamback with the heavy mag if you wants some bigger tighter lows and highs. But I am heavily biased against 75s, so take my suggestions with a grain of salt ;)

That's awesome Joe, they both look fantastic.... and if you say they sound just as good I believe you. I've been waiting for the new Marshall day post, but I knew that you'd be detail cleaning the crap out of it! Great stuff. Ref the G12 65's, I have 2 in my re-covered Orange cab and it sounds absolutely fabulous paired with G12 30's!

My ears are mostly used to Vintage 30's, so trying new speakers I've never owned is always a roll of the dice.

I have to say, those new Creamback 65's are awesome.....no regrets. And from the clips on youtube, my first choice might have been Creamback 75's. From now on, I'll be watching Craigslist for CB 65's and 75's, and phasing out anything that's not those or V30's.

I must learn this shoe polish trick! That amp looks PRISTINE! I love old beat up Marshalls, but that sir is Museum quality and you win the internet.

Even when you clean old tolex, you'll see some dust in the crevices and general fading over time. For tolex, you can just use regular black shoe polish and a shoe brush. Don't let any of it get on the white piping though. I hold a piece of cardboard against the piping when I'm hitting the inside edges with shoe polish.

For Marshall grillcloth, just use any brand of black liquid shoe polish, and put it in a spray bottle diluted with a little bit of water. DO NOT assume you can go around the logo. Remove the logo first. If you get any of the dye on the logo or white piping, it's ruined.

Luckily, the baffle on this Marshall didn't have the piping attached to it. It's stapled to the inside of the cab, so all I had to do was pull the logo off with a butter knife and mask off the corner badge (too hard to remove).

Re: Unveiling of my new Ultimate Marshall Fender rig!!!

An unmolested USA Marshall is tough enough to find, let alone one that's as clean as that one...major score Joe!

Re: Unveiling of my new Ultimate Marshall Fender rig!!!

Yes babe, the '65 creamback is THE one for the open backed JCM800. I'm not really surprised , given its you, that you found that out just by thinking. V30 would be cool with that.Hell, a G12h30 too. Neo. 12K-85/100. Eevn probalty just keep that 12t-75. can't lose at thios point. Awesome.

Re: Unveiling of my new Ultimate Marshall Fender rig!!!

Yeah, after playing the Marshall a lot, I'm growing really fond of the Creamback 65. I really need to find a 75W version, and start mixing these with V30's.

One cool thing about having a Marshall 212 with detachable speaker cable is that I can run other heads into it and use it as a speaker cab at home.

Ultimately, I'd like this Marshall to have the Creamback 65 and 75. And then, figure out which of those speakers would sound best next to a V30 in my Bogner 212 cab. My Jubilee straight 412 is currently empty, so I'll be moving some of the G12T-75 speakers over to that, since those are the speakers that are supposed to be in that cab.

The CB 65 has a lot of midrange content which goes great with the JCM800. But in this video, I also really like the tight bass and open highs of the 75. Listen to this and let me know which one you like.

Re: Unveiling of my new Ultimate Marshall Fender rig!!!

That's sick, the Creambacks are stupidly cool sounding. Between 'regular'/heritage GBs, the CB65/75, V30, and now the Lynchback, Celestion really has a sick lineup going for them.

This is the clip that finalised my preference for the M magnet over the H across the entire speaker range.

While the H is very nice overall, more transparent, balanced and probably more versatile in the grand scheme, it's kind of boring next to the M. Almost too bare bones and heading into the generic side of rock music. For straight up British snarl, the M wins out for me. Has a real voice of its own and brings out the bark in a Marshall.

Bark is the key word with the CB 65. And with a Marshall, it makes the mid knob feel more responsive.
I still want to try the CB 75 with the Marshall, but that might be a really nice speaker for a Fender amp too.

And Virtual Kevorkian is right about Celestion having some great speakers in their lineup these days. The Lynchback is pretty intriguing too, being kind of chunky and bassier. If I ever run across one on Craigslist, I'll grab it. I have a short list of speakers I'd buy immediately on the used market.

I got lucky finding the CB 65 for $90. I drove to a neighborhood I used to live in (West Los Angeles) to pick it up from a guy who turned out to be like a long lost brother deep into classic tones. Being a big vintage Marshall fan himself, he sort of reminded me of Simon F or Jeff B.....same taste in music and amps.....UFO, Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, Rush, Bad Co, Aerosmith, ZZ Top. His thing was Gibson/Fender into a Mojo Hand Rook Royale, into early 70's Marshalls.

So far, I like the Barber LTD silver, Klon, Marshall Gov'nor II, and Way Huge Green Rhino into the JCM800. All of them sound great into it.

Re: Unveiling of my new Ultimate Marshall Fender rig!!!

You really should load up that jooby cab with Greenbacks or Creambacks., IMO Joe.It will make a world of difference with your jooby compared to the speakers they were shipped with..v30s were too nasal for that amp, IMO, and the 75s castrated it.

And if necc, easy enough to return to stock if you have all those junkass...errr...T75s...laying around ;)
