hey guys, I've been playing an sgr c-7 deluxe, schecter's entry level 7 string. i love the way it plays, and generally sounds pretty good. Should I install a Pegasus/sentient set, or upgrade to a new axe all together? if you have suggestions or are looking to sell a 7 string, please feel free to comment. All are welcome.

Re: used 7 string or upgrade pickups?

Well, this is the wrong section to be asking for this kind of advice.

That said, I have no idea why you would want to get rid of a guitar that plays and sounds good. If you like the way it plays and just want to change the sound a bit, then pickups are the way to go. Don't get hung up on thinking that, just because it's an "entry level" guitar that it's not worth keeping. Lots of us have learned that the hard way ;)

Anyways, if you want more advice, I suggest you start a thread in the "Pickup Lounge" and/or "Guitar Shop" sections of the forum

Re: used 7 string or upgrade pickups?

Well $200 for new pickups vs. taking the $200, trade in my current guitar, and put it all towards a better guitar. Struggles.

Re: used 7 string or upgrade pickups?

If you like it then keep it, try to snag some pickups online for cheap.

Personally I think Schecter is total crap, but that's my opinion.

Re: used 7 string or upgrade pickups?

I picked up a Schecter 7-string from a forum bro here a few years ago, an A-7 Avenger. It's a Diamond Series so I don't know if it's quite entry level, but either way it plays and sounds great as well. My #1 6-string is a Schecter C-1 Classic as well.

If you enjoy playing it, I think you're on the right track with new pickups. Worst case, you can take the pickups you buy out of it later and sell the guitar for something else. I've got no experience with the Pegasus or Sentient, what kind of music are you looking to play with it?

I have a set of like new (because I switched them out straight away) EMG 707s if you're interested. You would need to route them for the soapbar design though and it would be difficult to switch it back to passive.

If you like the way a guitar plays, but not how it sounds, then changing pickups is the best option. There is no guarantee that you'd like the way a more expensive guitar plays.

I play a little of everything but I primarily play thrash, heavy metal, and djent. Sylosis is my ideal tone but I like being able to go even darker into the black dahlia murder or prog/djent like intervals. Heres a couple of links of the types of songs i'd be playing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tocEwt4HHOg - music video Sylosis - all of these songs are my preferred style - can we just take a minute and realize they play in standard tuning on 6 strings.

Heavier Style: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRUJU1G1VJY

Prog/Djent Style : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ipv_l7KoSI - tasty holy hell. Everyone should learn/listen to this song. Don't worry, theres no screaming. just pure amazing

IMO, you need to be concentrating on the amp more than the pickups. Unless you use modeling, which some of those bands do (AxeFx, etc), something similar to a Peavey 5150/6505 and a TubeScreamer type pedal will get you 90% of what you're after here.

That said, I can see something like a DiMarzio Crunch Lab/Liquifire set or the DiMarzio Illuminators being a very solid choice for those styles without breaking the bank.

Remember, the pickups are just icing on the cake and most of your sound will come from the amplification and effects. That's why Sylosis sounds like themselves whether they're using EMG-loaded ESP guitars or Gibsons with stock passive pickups.

Very very true. I'm running a blackstar ht-5r head through a 4x12 cab with celestion speakers. The setup is quite nice and the amp is actually incredible - highly recommended to anyone in any style. Ive been looking into an Ibanez tube screamer and then throwing Pegasus/sentient in. The guitar is basswood so the low end is already a little muddy. I believe the Pegasus will give me the articulation needed on top of giving it more sustain, distortion, and gain all at the same time.
