Used Seymour Duncan pups

Where are the best places to buy used SDs? Is one of them eBay? I run across guitars, here and there, that are worth buying just to take the SDs out of them & put them to better use.

So, what you're asking is "where is the best place to SELL pickups"? If so, eBay, Reverb.com, Craigslist, this forum, other forums...take your pick.

Re: Used Seymour Duncan pups

Buying used modified guitars just to rescue the American pickups from them only makes economic sense if you have a stash of OEM quality pickups to fill the vacancies.

unless you can
a) part out the rest of the guitar for a profit
b) the total cost was less than you would pay for just the pickups
c) sell the guitar for the same amount sans pickups.

I have done all of the above. Though usually it needs to be something more expensive than SD to make it really worthwhile.

Consider how much your time is worth to you before you begin and try your plan out with a single guitar to see if it's worth the hassle. Track the time and money you put into working on the guitar and turning it or selling the parts and figure out how much you really make "per hour". Most used Duncan/DiMarzio pickups bring $40-$60 on the used market before fees, shipping costs, etc., so keep that in mind (whether you are buying or selling).

Also, is it a part you need to complete a particular project as well?

I will pay up to around $75 for a guitar to harvest Duncans out of it, but that is about it. It can become viable if you found some of the more ridiculously priced pickups in a budget guitar. (Say original 50s p90s in a busted neck lp special. Don't laugh, a friend of mine found just that.) I have done it for a pair of exorbitantly priced PAFs in an epi. (the kind of set that used runs $400+) I have bought a guitar, stripped the pickups and sold the husk for the same price I paid with the pickups. It is all about finding the deals though.
And generally, it has to be something offbeat to be worth the time. Doing it for $20 profit, not worth it, unless that is the only way you can afford what you want and you have excess time.

Re: Used Seymour Duncan pups

I paid $180 for a set of Duncans once, JB/59 as I recall. But they did come with a Schecter baritone Blackjack wrapped around them and aside from magnet swapping, they have stayed put.

I bought a Peavey strat for $200 'cos it had a set of Kinmans
I got $100 for the Peavey sans pickups so it worked out ok

(why someone would put $350 of pickups in a cheapo Peavey is still a mystery to me)
