Used Tube Amps

Ok, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a good used tube amp. I don't wanna spend more than 500-600 dollars. I'm mainly looking for a killer metal rig. I play mostly Metallica, Sabbath, and Slayer. I was thinkin maybe a Peavey 5150 combo, but I'm very open for suggestions. :headbang:

Re: Used Tube Amps

Thanks.. I checked out the Mark III.. but I think it's a little outta my price range. (999-1100 on ebay) Anyone else?

Re: Used Tube Amps

Probably a combo... it's cheaper and more conventient (no cabs to move around)

Re: Used Tube Amps

Oh, and I'd like it to be at least loud enough for a small-medium gig. So that's, what, like 50-60 watts?

Re: Used Tube Amps

A Marshall JCM800 combo and an OD pedal (to push the amp further) may do what you're looking for.

Re: Used Tube Amps

Sounds like you like a lot of preamp gain.

However, an Orange AD15 or Laney VC30 would be my choices for cheap used tube amps.

Re: Used Tube Amps

Since you already have the 5150 Combo in mind, let me say that that's one of my 2 main amps. It's a good amp for high gain tones and LOUD! I've owned mine for almost 6 years now without a single problem. Note that if your gonna be traveling around with it, that it weighs close to 90 pounds though.

That's the one I'd recommend: 5150. If a player can't get a good tone out of one of those it's NOT the amp's fault, IMO. Lew

Re: Used Tube Amps

Laney AOR 50W. I guess it's around max. $200 in your place. I use the head version that has active push-pull EQ pots and each do an insane amount of boost. It has one channel but hey it's a killer one. It's a stand-alone Sabbath generator, with an EQ in the FX loop you can get Slayer grind or old-school Metallica crunch any time and you have just spared $400 to beer, chicks and gear ;)

Re: Used Tube Amps

Hey, thanks for the suggestions guys. Sorry it took me so long to respond to all these.. I'm pretty well decided on a used 5150 combo. But, is there anything else I should know here? What are some cons of the 5150? I've heard it's kind of muddy with the gain up.

Re: Used Tube Amps

When I was looking for amps I was going to get a 5150 combo. When I tested it I loved the OD, but I wanted nicer cleans. I ended walking into a local music store and asked about a nice tube amp that met my requirments, and I was taken to a Crate Vfx5112. I was shocked! I have never really liked Crate but what an amazing amp! I knew the store owner and he let me crank it up to about 8 and I would say is was plenty loud. With a PA system I'm sure it can do a medium size venue gig. I would say if you can test this amp out, you should plug right in.

Re: Used Tube Amps

I suggest the Peavey XXX. I don't really use all that high gain, but from what I could tell, it's just a 5150 with a better clean. The 1x12 combo's 40w. And all you really need for a small-medium gig is 30-50w tube. If for some reason you need more, you can always mic it or run it to an ext. cab.

Re: Used Tube Amps

How much does that XXX combo run used? There aren't any on Ebay. And, exactly how loud IS it?
