Using a FuzzFace kinda fuzz with a Les Paul

Well... I can't...

:banghead:

I love it with a strat, yet with a Les Paul the neck kinda sounds too big too muffled. Well the bridge, again too big you know. BTW the FuzzFace clone that I have is an Analogman NKT275 white dot I guess high gain but am not %100 sure. The amp is a metal panel clone at 50W.

So is there a trick that I am missing?

Or should I go silicon?

Thanks in advance.

It takes some time to get it down...it just takes some tweaking and practice.

The payoff is killer...this is Marc Ford with a Les Paul (stock T-Tops), a Fuzz Face and a late 60's small box plexi Marshall...on the neck pickup for the solo.

FWIW, my brother's LP Std (w Duncan 59's) just love my Throbak FuzzHaze, with both his AC15, and my semi cranked Bassman.

Re: Using a FuzzFace kinda fuzz with a Les Paul

i love the nkt sunface with humbuckers, but i use fender type amps mostly.
Where do you set the bias and the input gain?
I have a few fuzz faces of my own and i like the NKT best, but the hartman bc108 silicon is not far behind.
Perhaps you might prefer something with more control over the mid and bass content than a fuzzy face - maybe something like a voodoo superfuzz.

Have you tried rolling the Volumes on the guitar back a little to tighten it up? If you've got '50s wiring in your LP, try rolling the Tones back a little bit too.

Re: Using a FuzzFace kinda fuzz with a Les Paul

any type of fuzz pedal is pretty tricky. Make sure to use them in a band setting, they can sound a lot different by themselves!

Re: Using a FuzzFace kinda fuzz with a Les Paul

using fuzzes with germanium transistors can be even more tricky. They don't hit as hard and are all pretty different creatures. I'm sure your transistors are matched, but that doesn't mean much when comparing one Sunface to another if they have different hfe levels on transistor couplets.

I also just looked it up on Analogman and there's a trimmer inside the pedal labeled "clean". wouldn't hurt to mess around with that.

"We are now making these in our own cases, as the Analog Man Sun Face . They are hand-built in the USA in small gold boxes, with our own USA made SUNFACE circuit board, which was made small enough to fit in almost any enclosure. As you can see in the picture down below a bit, this is a VERY high quality board of the same type used on our other pedals. It is better quality than almost any other fuzzface clone you will find, with shielding, plated through-holes, etc to meet military specs. It also has an internal CLEAN trim pot (white knob). This trim pot acts just like turning down the VOLUME knob on your guitar, to clean up the fuzz. It can be used to preset the sound as with the volume knob rolled back a bit. It also allows easier control of the volume knob on your guitar when the white CLEAN trim pot is turned a bit. It can also be used to kill Radio Frequency Interference, which may be a problem on high gain pedals in some areas, by turning it down a hair. like all our handmade pedals, the Sunface has true bypass, so when off they do not alter your sound at all. The CLEAN trimpot will also allow the sunface to work better after a vintage style wah pedal, without having to use a foxrox wah retrofit."

Cool! Thanks for the encouragement bro, I definitely will not be giving up that easy...

This sound is great, and in fact sorta sounds like what I am after.

Thanks for chiming in guys...

I am not gonna be changin the amp in the short run. I really like it. The only thing is this fuzz business.

gibson175, don't push me bro, I've been jonesing for a Professional MKII for quite a long while, and they are expensive you know.

:)

And... I want to get a Sam Ash Fuzz Boxx clone as well. Not in the very short run though.

Sure. I have changed all them pots on my R7 to 500K audios. I kinda like audio tone controls, not the "common" wisdom I know but anyways... So, I am one of those adjusting the volume and tone quite a bit while playing... Hence, the NKT you know...

BTW thanks for the input!

Thanks!

You are absolutely right about them GE trannies especially when it comes to gain... Mine sounds alright I think. With a strat, it has "the sound" you know...

... and I have done that adjustment with the white trim pot. Mine is just a bit below the max.

Re: Using a FuzzFace kinda fuzz with a Les Paul

Try putting a treble booster in front of the fuzz. I use a Beano Boost (among others) in front of my SunFace ...

Re: Using a FuzzFace kinda fuzz with a Les Paul

I use the mini fuzz face blue, works great with humbuckers or Jimi is great also

Re: Using a FuzzFace kinda fuzz with a Les Paul

If you get a FF-type pedal with an input gain pot, it will work with any type of pickups, just lower the input gain for higher-output pu's. The input gain pot also makes the FF work with a wah in front of the fuzz, you just turn the volume on the fuzz all the way up and drop the input gain pot. No need for output buffers in a wah with this type of Fuzz Face, and the fuzz sounds just as good as a two-knob FF. You could have your pedal modded to have a small input gain trimmer if you want, and it will accomplish the same thing.
