Using a subwoofer as an amp?

So a few years back my family handed me down some really nice surround sound for my living room complete with a nice big subwoofer, the ssystem is good but too many wires everywhere had to take it down, but I'm lookin at this subwoofer and something keeps telling me I can use this for something...

Re: Using a subwoofer as an amp?

Just sell it and get something you can use. Bad idea to use home stereo gear for guitar or PA applications.

Re: Using a subwoofer as an amp?

I do use an active sub as a bass amp for fiddling about the house...but for real world practical applications, it's a bad idea...yes you can get some extra low end with guitar but only if you know a lot about cabs/crossovers and the melding of the high and low signals. More of a studio thing than a live thing.

Truth is, if you need to ask, you aren't qualified to make it work.

Re: Using a subwoofer as an amp?

A speaker used for a subwoofer is unlikely to function well as a midrange driver like for guitar.....even assuming it had the volume and dynamic range handling capabilities.

Re: Using a subwoofer as an amp?

I use an old 15" Utah speaker cabinet that is intended to be used for stereo all the time. Sounds great. Buck the trend and try it... It may suck, it may not.

Re: Using a subwoofer as an amp?

Is it just a speaker in an enclosure or does it have a power amp and input section ?

Re: Using a subwoofer as an amp?

I am not optimistic. But….don't let the haters poo-poo on your creativity.

Slyfoxx, the truth is, if I'm not qualified, that makes me want to try it. How else would I learn how?

Re: Using a subwoofer as an amp?

Expect it to stink. Try it, though; you might be surprised.

Re: Using a subwoofer as an amp?

Measure the ohms on the two wires
Make sure you have a proper load
Don't.damage you good stuff experimenting

If.its.powered
Use you amps line level out

If.unpowered again make sure it has a.sufficient load
And plug into a speaker out on amp

Don't expect much

Oh dude seriously give it a go. Knowledge is a good thing.

I came across as a bit harsh in my initial post. That wasn't my intention. It's just that there's a lot of minutia to master with our craft.
