Using Garage Band

So, what kind of mic and/or preamp device do you guys use that wish to use Garage Band to record your guitars and your vocals?

Re: Using Garage Band

I've been using an M-Audio preamp/external sound card and a Shure SM57. Simple setup, sounds decent, and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg.

Re: Using Garage Band

For guitars, I run my modeler direct via USB. I have a couple different options for getting miked signals into GB.

I have presonus FireWire 8 or something. 8 inputs so I can multitrack in GarageBand. I put 2 57's in front of my cab. One goes to the presonus. The other goes into a pod x3 live on a mic setting. I use a stereo delay on it running two inputs into presonus. I use a Roland electric drum set stereo as well. For bass I use the pod x3 live.

Re: Using Garage Band

I use an older model of the Presonus Firebox. I've also had good luck with a friends M-Audio Mobile Pre. Most of the recording I've done has been with a SM58 for vocals and the rest being direct. However I'm looking to upgrade to a decent condenser mic soon for acoustic guitar and vocals.

+1

Said setup sounds fine. Like Frank Lee, you'll probably find a couple of amps in the program that speak to you and you will come back to them.

Thank you.

Re: Using Garage Band

I bought a USB Snowball mic. Came in today. Looking forward to seeing how it works directly into my macbook.

Re: Using Garage Band

For anything beyond typing dictation, a microphone directly into the socket on the side of the Mac is likely to suck.

I use a MOTU Ultralite mk3. This handles audio, MIDI and has the advantage of taking its power via the FireWire cable.

A buddy of mine has one of those. He's done some recordings of just him and an acoustic in one take, and they sounded really good.

Re: Using Garage Band

The fact that it's made by Blue does tend to make it a little askew of expectations... they don't make weak sauce.

Re: Using Garage Band

Had some pretty good reviews on the net. I'm only recording stuff to please myself. It'll be better than the on-board mic I was using on the macbook. :)

I have the Snowball Ice, very nice for the money especially since there's no preamp involved going straight in.

Snowball Ice with EQ, compressor, reverb and delay added in the mix.
