Using Headphones for Studio Monitoring?

Hi guys!

I am in the process of planning my own "amateur studio" in a room of our house, since i really want to get my music recorded. I got enough material for about two CD's, but recording on this PC i'm using now (my only one), in my tiny room, is just irritating me. The conditions aren't there, etc. You know what i mean.

So, i've planned everything except the monitors. Seeing that a pair of good quality studio monitors are really expensive, i were wondering if it's adviceable to use a professional pair of headphones instead?

I think that everything sounds much clearer, more direct, and transparent with headphones compared to monitors. Could i be somewhat true in my statement?

So, let me get to the point. Have anyone, or do anyone use(d) headphones for monitoring while recording\mixing music? Why\why not?

Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated. I need some input!

Thanks,
-Erlend

You can get a used set of KRK Rokit's that sounds great for very cheap.

I'd only use headphones while tracking, to be perfectly honest. That, or hearing really detailed things... reverb tails, etc.

Of course it will sound more direct cause its right on your ears. You shouldn't mix anything on headphones unless it's the only thing you have. Headphones don't give you a stereo image to mix in.

In other words, good headphones are nice to listen back in occasionally, track in, or try and hear small nuances in. Monitors are the real deal for mixing and the entire soundscape in general.

yeah, I'm using shure in-ear monitors right now, but when I switch over to regular speakers, the mixing sounds off, so I have to redo it accordingly, it's more different than I'd imagined
