Using nail varnish to touch up a messed up finish?

I heard of this method and I must say it'd make sense for small touching up, but what's the deal exactly? I couldn't find much info on it... I wouldn't mind redoing my red model 1a and my cobalt blue mode 4 where paint has chipped.

I've heard of it, too, but I've never tried it. I think it's because there are so many colors available - probably more than you'd find in the car touch-up paint. I would think it's a little too thick to do a good job, though. It would probably depend on how big an area you needed to cover.

I once t-up my PRS and I tell you I now prefer the look of a ding as compared to a ding that has been touched up. Touch ups are noticeable.

I just touched up a fairly large chip on the back of my cherry sunburst Epi Les Paul. I borrowed some nail polish from the wife that kinda matched, and then put lots of clear over it, and made sure that the transition from the painted area to the chipped area was smooth and won't promote further peeling or chipping. The results were good and even though the color did not exactly match, the wood grain came through, and in a dimly lit room you have to really look hard to find the touched up area from a few feet away. Looks much better than the bare exposed wood and rough edges. Wish I has some before photos to compare with. Don't expect too much though. I would not have attempted this on the front of the instrument.

Thats the beauty of Lacquer.:) Any small chip can be drop filled and buffed out. Like someone mentioned ...A bad touch up job looks worse than a chip.

you may be better off with car touchup paint...

I used red nail polish to touch up the paint on my red Jackson and filled in the chip with super glue.. filed the glue down and sanded and buffed the spot until you could not see the repair.... But saddly over the last 10 years since the repair the nail polish faded and it looks like a clump of super glue now... When i first did the repair you could not see the repair.. Stupid me dropped a Floyd Rose bridge onto the back of my Jackson...

I tried to fix a ding with nail polish the color is perfect and it works but the problem is how do you remove it if needed?

Nail polish is good for lacquer finishes. Other types of paint are better for poly IMO.

Cardinal has you covered for almost any purpose: nitrocellulose lacquer, acrylic, alkyd, urethane, polyurethane, polyester...all in sprays or brush-on form.

Try Sharpie marker first

Get a 24-color set, it can get a fair approximation of most colors except metallics with a lot of sparkles
