Using north coils for single coil split instead of south

Hi

This is my first post, so here goes...

I have a 95 US Tele that I have fitted a TB5 Custom to the bridge, enabling me to get series/split/parallel sounds with the aid of a mini toggle inbetween the volume and tone controls.

I had it wired by a tech, as these were the days before I dared to pick up a soldering iron. However, I'm pretty confident now doing wiring jobs. So what I'd like to know is can I change just the split single coil setting to use the inner (north) coils instead of the outer (south) ones? I prefer the sound much more having played a guitar like this. I think the outer coil sound is a bit ice picky. Is this just a simple wire swap?

Hope someone can help?

Cheers!

don't know if this will help, seeing as how you have a 3-way switch with series/split/parallel, but...

Yes you can. Plus and minus or which coil is the active coil when "split" are purely arbitrary on a 4 conductor pickup, even though manufacturers list those things as if they were handed down by God.

To stay in phase, just use the same polarity wire from the other coil as hot. So on a Duncan (Lollar is the same), this goes as follows: (Note plus and minus are arbitrary, plus on a humbucker is minus on a single coil if you want them to be in phase, you have to wire one with 'minus' as hot):

Slug Coil (North pole up) Black (+) White (-)
Screw Coil (South Pole up) Red (+) Geen (-)

Normal polarity single coils are South poles, and if you want them in phase with your humbucker, use black hot/white ground.

RWRP Singles are North Poles.

When using HSS, I prefer that the screw side of the humbucker (bridge side) be active when split with the middle (quacks better), so I use a North Pole middle and South Pole neck.

DiMarzios are as follows:
Slug Coil (North pole up) Red (+) Black (-)
Screw Coil (South Pole up) White (+) Geen (-)

Re: Using north coils for single coil split instead of south

I have the Triple shot rings on my RG
and I find the adjustable coil to be a bit brighter than the slug

I like the warmer slug coil
but thats just me

ON my strat I have a three way on off on switch
that allows me to to chose either coil or humbucker

I plan on putting an on on on switch in my buddies guitar
to get
one split coil
series humbucker
parallel humbucker

FWIW: the adjustable coil can be brighter sounding because of its position (closer to the bridge with a bridge pickup).
That said, physically, the slug coil is louder & brighter sounding in most HB's. IOW, If someone mounts a bridge HB with the slugs close to the bridge and enables this slugs coil only, it will be brighter than in the regular position.
Nothing more than my 2 cents.

the brighter screws are evident on my Jazz too
which is the coil farthest from the bridge

just sayin'
