v30 and g12h30 w/ 100w amp

Re: v30 and g12h30 w/ 100w amp

is it safe to have a v30 and a g12h30 in a 212 cab with a 100w amp?? or would I just break something?

Depends on if your cranking it or not. With that combo your looking at a 60 watt cab since essentially (correct me if I'm wrong) double the lowest watt speaker (since it's a 212).

I was faced with a similar dilemma and ended up playing it safe by substituting the CLassic Lead 80 instead of the G12H30.

Re: v30 and g12h30 w/ 100w amp

Ideally you want the wattage of the cab to be more than the head.

Re: v30 and g12h30 w/ 100w amp

yes, double the lowest wattage speaker's power rating, in this case.

I wouldn't do it. Amps are usually rated at some %THD (total harmonic distortion) which in practice means that the amp will be putting out something like a 100W when the power amp begins to distort. On something like a marshall, this often means somewhere beween 3 and 5 on the master. So unless you want to run the amp on just 3 all the time, I wouldn't run those two speakers.

You could try an eminence wizard, which most people claim is a good substitute. It handles 75W.

But even then, many amps are capable of producing more than their rated wattage when dimed. if you dime the head, there's still a chance of burning out the V30... but for the life of me I can't name too many people who run their 100W heads full tilt all the time, so you'd probably be OK.

Re: v30 and g12h30 w/ 100w amp

everyones right, you have a 60w cab & your 100w (tube?) amp could put out more than 100w

i have a cab with those two speakers, v30 & g12h30, that i use with a dual showman reverb which is rated at 85w. i dont ever run the volume higher than 4 so i dont worry about it. if you run the volume much higher than that then i wouldn't risk it.

i like eminence speakers and use a few of them, good stuff. i dont think the emi versions of stuff sound exactly like the ones theyre modeled after though

Re: v30 and g12h30 w/ 100w amp

The Eminence don't sound exactly like their counterparts, but I can't say enough good things about pairing a Wizard with a Governor in a 2x12.

Re: v30 and g12h30 w/ 100w amp

so 65 watts and 30 watts = 105 right?

wrong.

when you divide the load from your 100 watt amp, then each speaker can potentially see 50watts each. Which is fine for the V30, but not so good for the g12h30.

im pretty much repeating what everyone else here has said except ill add this....
if one speaker dies then the load on the amp will change also....so no good for the amp....plus if your 30watter blows then the 65 watter is getting all the juice, so its likely to crap out also....

my alternative option is to go with a wizard and a governor, i heard that combo isnt as sweet and articulate as the celestions but has more balls

those are both rated at 75w so that would put me at 150w, right??

i doubt the volume on my amp would ever see past 4 anyways, but id rather be safe

I also really like the Private Jack it's kind of their take on the classic greenback.

I'd pair it with a Governor if you like the V30 vibe. I actually prefer the tone of the Emi's to the chinese current production Celestions but that's just my opinion and of course YMMV.

I believe the PJ handles 50 watts too so paired with a Governor you shouldn't have to worry about blowing up either speaker. The Wizard is also nice but I think it's got a little more upper mid content than the PJ. So it just depends on how you want to cut in a mix. I think there'd be more contrast between a PJ and a Governor than a Governor and a Wizard since the Wizard is kind of a cross between the two tonally.
