Valve Jr vs. Champ 600

Re: Valve Jr vs. Champ 600

i only have experience with a valve jr., and i love those things. the stock tubes are a little brittle and lifeless but if you put somethin better in there the thing really comes to life.

i got one a while back and ran it thru my 4x12...when i took it to a store to demo some used 1x12's with it (to build a smaller practice rig, y'know) everybody in the store turned to look. they were blown away! "I didn't think 5 watts could power a 12" speaker!" and things like that.

if you've already got a cab laying around, or can afford the head and a cheapo cab, you really can't go wrong. it's a great amp for low volume practice, and a good enough amp for higher volumes if you can live without any cleans. we used to jam with me on my bassman head doing lead and my friend on the valve jr. doing rhythm and the tones blended amazingly.

Re: Valve Jr vs. Champ 600

I have the Champ 600, and out of the two (which I tried both) I perferred the 600. (stock) not as thin and rattley as the Valve Jr. I replaced the stock tubes with a Tungsol 6V6GT and a Tungsol 12AX7 and that made a night and day difference. It now sounds very full and very warm. If you paly w/a pick then it's very loud fora 5watt, w/o pick its nice and mellow. I have a 1x12 solid pine cab that I'm going to load w/a Celestion Heritage Greenback as soon as I get some cash. It should prove very cool.

Re: Valve Jr vs. Champ 600

Am i the only one who thinks that if the head is 5 watts and it's a 1x12 cabinet, it should be called an 'eighth stack'? That's what i've been calling my Valve Jr. rig...

Re: Valve Jr vs. Champ 600

I tried a 600 the other day and it sounded pretty terrible, but maybe like you're all saying if I change the tube and put it through a 12" speaker it'll sound better.

Re: Valve Jr vs. Champ 600

I say Valve Junior head would be the best. I don't touch 8 inch speakers anymore, let alone 6 inch speakers. Get the Valve Junior head, put some decent tubes in it, get a cab for 1x12 or something, 2x12, 1x15 etc. Makes a huge difference, really opens up the sound of the amp. Good luck bro
