Valvetronix line of amps

All the talk about these amps has my gasing for one, maybe that is what my tax return will go to. As you'd expect the HRDx is to loud for the apt. and dosen't sound that great at low volumes. Everyone says the models are really good and I like the versitility of it. But I get confused on all the different models there are. I've heard most people say they like the blue grill version better and they sound best in a head version on a good cab. My budget is going to be around $600, so getting a head and cab probably isn't the best option, and I like the idea of a combo better. Really I just want something that will sound good at lower volumes to play around with, maybe something to take to a small jam session. Do the combo's models still sound good, is there like a night and day difference between the head and combo version? AMS is selling the AD60VTX for $499, seems like a good buy. Will one of these combos benefit from two 12's as opposed to one?

I don't own one, but I have 2 friends with the AD120VTX, and one with the AD60VTX.

Both combos sounds great. They are awesome amps, and very versatile. I do imagine the head would sound great paired with specific cabs, but the combos are no slouch. They sound great. The 2nd guitarist in my last band gigged with his 2x12 and it rocked.

I may not have been much help, but personally I don't think you can go wrong with them.

I've gigged with my 120 VTH Head and Vox AD 2x12(V30s) cab for almost 2 years now! Great setup, very versatile, convincing tones all night also!

They are some of the best modelers out there, if not THE best. You really can't beat that price either. Better snatch one up before they get gone. The desktop TONELAB is also down to $199.00 at AMS.

Re: Valvetronix line of amps

If you get a combo, keep in mind that you can always swap out the speaker(s) when you've got more cash. You may very well find you don't even need/want to do that.

I think they are the best modeling amp out there. Something else to chew on, for 600 bucks you could get a fender champ clone. That would satisfy the home volume distortion. Granted it wouldn't give you all the models, which are a lot of fun when you're at home messing around.

Re: Valvetronix line of amps

I've noticed that this amp lives to be cranked. The louder the better it seems. Still sounds great at low volumes, but cranked it's a total shag-beast. Versatile and infinitely giggable. Most convincing marshall tones I've heard on a modeler. Cranked, she does "marshall" better than the marshalls do. I'm head over heels in love with mine. So much so, I'm considering breaking down and buying another before they all dry up just so I'll have a backup in case this one goes tits up on me... Phenominal amp with V30 speakers.

That ad60 at AMS is a friggin steal.

that said..$ for $, silver or blue...you can't beat them....Da5/AD15/AD50, or the 60/120s....

I'd shy away from the 30 unless you def wanna swap speakers...they are anemic sounding...its a really bad speaker matchup expect for a couple of the clean(er) models.

For under 200 bucks, the AD15VT is just a phenomenal deal. WAY too loud for home if ya get the volume up, but sounds great at low to medium volumes, and just throw a mic on it for bigger gigs. I absolutely love mine. Once the speaker breaks in, whoooaaaanelly :bigok:

Re: Valvetronix line of amps

For $400, you can get one of the 2 blue heads used or new/discounted, and have $200 to spend on a good Vin 30 2-12 cab.....used, most likely. Just shop wisely, and you can pull it off.

Re: Valvetronix line of amps

I've got the AD60VTX. By itself, it sounds pretty good and sounds even better in a band mix. When I put it through my Earcandy 2X12 it's a monster. I think what Gearjoneser said is a great idea. You can pick up a head then get a cheap 2X12 cab to start with and have a killer rig. Get a pedal later on and you're set.

Re: Valvetronix line of amps

ive got one and love it im swapping the electro harmonix 12ax7 tube with a mesa boogie 12ax7 it gives it more gain and sounds great clean aswell you should try it if you have a valvetronix amp

Re: Valvetronix line of amps

Like said, they're the best modellers out there, IMO. I've been using the AD50 1x12 since last June/July. Hasn't been a problem at all. If the AD60/120 models were on sale then like they are now, I would've snagged one of those simply for the extra features. Once the speaker broke in (Celestion 7080) the tone got even better. And like Scott said, it loves to be cranked up.

There is only one thing I recommend as soon as one is purchased, no matter what model. Take some clear nail polish and get it in to the threads of the input jack nut and the shaft. That'll keep it from coming lose, which has been an issue for some. That was the first thing I did when I got mine open and took it out of the box.

Re: Valvetronix line of amps

I think so. Check what the cost is for shipping. With the small difference between the starting bid and the BIN price, it's silly not to go with the BIN if you want this. If there's a bidding war, it'll last all of two minutes.

If I didn't have one already, I'd probably snatch it up myself.

Re: Valvetronix line of amps

When I see completed auctions like these below, I'd say that is too much for that head unless you are specifically looking for that particular one. This head doesn't come up often, but the 120 watt stereo one does and it's usually around the same price when the seller is realistic. Once in awhile you'll see them going with the foot controller, which is normally a hundred bucks or more on its own. If you're not in a rush, scour ebay for a few weeks and you'll find something which is imo better than that deal.
