Van Halen sound...EVH pickups??

I have searched before I posted this. I am looking to start my VH replica guitar. I was wondering if the EVH Custom pickups were meant to mimick the early VH sound or if it is a coincidence that it means Evenly Voiced Harmonics. What's the truth? Thanks and sorry if this has been discussed a thousand times before.

According to SD, EVH stands for Evenly Voiced Harmonics.
I know that the Bare Knuckle VHII will give you that tone (I have one in a super strat myself), but it's pricey.

Interesting...Thanks for the info. I take it you're pretty happy with it? May I ask why you picked that one? Were you also trying to achieve the EVH tone? Anyone else with suggestions? Thanks...

I was looking for a pickup that would be very expressive and dynamic, and didn't have a ceramic magnet - that's why I picked that one. I had it made as a reverse zebra, and it sounds amazing! It's very raw, very 'brown', but dynamic as all get out!!

The Even Voiced Harmonic's is deifnitely the Eddie pickup. They just don't use his name for licensing reasons I belive.

From what I remember reading it's a replica of the PAF used on VH1

It is and it does, but if you want that tone on a Miller Lite budget the Blues Trembucker is very very very similar. I have had both and side-by-side there is only the very slightest difference in tone.

Of course, the Blues won't *look* right in a VH replica...

Get a '59 Model for the early sounds or a CC for the later sounds (post OU812). As mentioned 101 times before, a lot of that sound comes from the amp too but those pickups will help get you in the ballpark.

Get a '59 Model for the early sounds or a CC for the later sounds (post OU812). As mentioned 101 times before, a lot of that sound comes from the amp too but those pickups will help get you in the ballpark.

+1 to everything. I've also heard that the Custom Custom can get you close to the early stuff, too. I've never messed with mine to try it, though.

Yeah, with some tone stack tweaking on the amp, and adjusting it's distance from the strings, it can get pretty darn close to the early stuff.

The Pearly Gates, 59, and Seth all get you pretty close too (when using a Marshall).

I agree...and get a Marshall 50 watt or 100 watt and TURN IT UP. That's at least half of the early EVH tone...maybe more than half. If a guy actually owned the single humbucker guitar EVH used on the first album or two and all he had to plug it into was some dinky solid state amp (or even a great amp, like a Fender Deluxe Reverb) it wouldn't sound anything like that same guitar played through a cranked Marshall.

ill be selling a pair of 59's probably in early september. (ive yet to take them out of the guitar). if you want ill sell you the 59b. its a good pickup that im not interested in.

this thing sounds EXACTLY like his first record tone
seriously it has that same EVH scream and punch that he got on the first three records

9.1k with Airbucker and Virtual design.

Cheaper than all the above options, I believe.

Save your money and get a custom custom! There isnt much tonal difference between that and an EVH! I have owned both!!! They are VERY close!
