Van Halen's tone mysteries went way deeper with the release of the evh Bumblebee...

Re: Van Halen's tone mysteries went way deeper with the release of the evh Bumblebee.

My favorite part is how they talk about analyzing photos, etc... but don’t talk about why they can’t measure/analyze directly. Because the original is with Dime.

It sounds like the tone pot was never used though.

Was in high school when VH 1 was released. Ground breaking, great player ect.
That said i have never felt the need nor been attracted to any of his products including amps & guitars.
I personally think the gear that made him famous looks like junk. And all his stuff looks like junk to be honest.
And i pay no attention to his constant merchandising.
Lets face it, he hasn't made new music since the Hagar days & the Van Hagar stuff i can't stand.
After 40+ years of being bombarded with VH stuff at this point i wish it would take a 20 year hiatus.

This is truly the post modern age of Rockn Roll.

Where Music, Guitar progression, and technology are on the back burner to historical reissues

Best part is Eddie trolled people on his setups for years convincing people certain things were part and parcel to the tone when in fact they were purely vestigial. It kept a whole generation on a wild goose chase for something much simpler.

And it seems people are still being fooled even now

$20k!?

A fool and their money

What I have leaned about Ed gear wise is what ever he said he used do the opposite

Honestly, I never tried, but is his sound that difficult to get? Unless you're in tribute band, is it even worth pursuing?

As much as I love Van Halen, in my mind there are no album after 1984.

RE: EVH Signature gear, until the Phase 95 was released the EVH Phase 90 was the best affordable Phaser from MXR. The new Chorus looks like a great way to get rack chorus tones, and the D-Tuna is pretty cool. Also, the 5150 falls into the classic amp category now.

It was incredibly difficult to get the 1st album tone down, primarily because:

- missing gear data / misdirection
- 1968 Plexi specs and the mystery .68uF cap on V2
- recreating Ted & Don's studio efforts and studio gear is its own mystery

Here's two of my efforts; real backing tracks with my guitar and studio FX:

Unless you're in tribute band, is it even worth pursuing?

I would only recommend those who are really serious (like, studying/research serious) about tone, those who fiddle in the recording studio, or those who are just huge fans of Ed... devote the $$$, research and time.

Aside from that, I mean the guy only influenced a whole generation, turned the guitar playing world on its head, introduced gear innovations and saved RnR
from the evil clutches of disco and punk.

Re: Van Halen's tone mysteries went way deeper with the release of the evh Bumblebee.

They went from making legendary albums to making good albums. It’s a brutal comparison.

It sure is. God knows I've tried my darnest with everything post-1984 but alas, I often find myself reverting back to Fair Warning pretty quick. Sorry Ed; I love you man but.....

Yeah, it was, but it hasn't been since about 1998...

If you are in a Tribute band, I'd recommend a POD. Unless you want to throw away Kemper money.
